Gabriel Allon, Israeli intelligence agent and expert art restorer, keeps trying to retire from his espionage past. To this end he is, once again, in Vatican City restoring an old painting. Unfortunately, murder seems to follow him around, for a young Vatican employee fell (or was pushed) to her death, and the pope's assistant wants Gabriel to investigate.
