N’ICE works nicely on sore throat pain

Pros: Sugar free, for kids over six and adults

Cons: 10 calories per lozenge

The Bottom Line: Cooling relief for coughs and sore throat pain in a pleasing cherry flavor.

I have been using N’Ice Cherry Lozenges for many years now, finding them conveniently at my local Rite Aid store for under three dollars. On occasion stock has been low but never sold out. It would be nice to see coupons on this product, but in my locale that has not happened.

There are twenty-four lozenges in each red box with the cute penguin on the front wrapped in a red scarf. There are three silver blister packs containing eight in each. I keep one pack in my purse for convenience when a sore throat or couch begins. Children over the age of six can suck on a lozenge as well. My son is almost nine and did not like the N’Ice Cherry Lozenges at all, so he sticks with the Cold Relief Pops.

The expiration date is imprinted lightly on the side of the box and not on any of the blister packs. The box in my possession is good until December 2004. There is a limit of ten lozenges a day. Since this has a dual purpose the directions for when the next lozenge can be taken differs for a cough and sore throat. When a cough is the symptom the lozenge can be done on an hourly basis, but when there is a sore throat the N’Ice Cherry Lozenges need to be two hours. Should the sore throat last more than two days or occur with fever, headache, rash, swelling, nausea or vomiting, than discontinue use and seek professional guidance.

If you are using the N’Ice Cherry Lozenges for sore throat or mouth irritation you can continue using for seven days, unless pain worsens or redness appears then stop using and consult with a Doctor. If you take more than directed it may have a laxative effect. I have asthma but my coughs are due to colds and weather related. Coughs that are part of smoking, asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis need professional help from a Doctor. If your cough contains too much mucus this would not be the product to take.

The active ingredient is 5 mg of menthol with the inactive ingredients consisting of dyes, flavors, sorbitol and tartaric acid. Those who have children following the Feingold Diet would not want to use this product. The lozenges are very easy to push through the blister pack. There is no need to cut or twist anything to get them removed. The flavor is cherry and instantly recognizable when placed in your mouth for dissolving. Sorbitol is a diabetic safe sweeter; diabetics should ask a doctor before taking these lozenges. There are ten calories per each lozenge.

About two minutes later after having a nice feeling of cherry in your mouth with the N’Ice Cherry Lozenges BAM! It hits you. The medicine taste starts to make its way into your mouth. This is a lot different than when you first pop one in your mouth and why my son after a few minutes had to spit it out. There are times I do not need to have it dissolve fully and will dispose of it in the garbage. Other times I am out and about doing errands and just endure the sensation of medicine mouth. Your tongue does change color, but there is no staining to your teeth. I have many times popped one in my mouth before taking kids to school and continue about my day without removing it.

So far we have been lucky here in Southern California with the weather and for several months now no one has been sick in my household. I have been experiencing lower gum pain due to new dentures and tried taking a lozenge here and there to see if relief was possible. This did help the discomfort since I forgot about the pain while enduring the rush of medicine soothing my throat. Sucking one lozenge will take no more than fifteen minutes to dissolve. The whole process is not painful and does not leave your throat dry. I have chewed the last remaining bits or swallowed it with no ill effects.

N’Ice Cherry Lozenges is a cough suppressant and oral anesthetic that offers cooling relief for coughs and minor sore throat pain. A few weeks ago I made a purchase with a coupon for a similar product Chloraseptic® Sore throat lozenges. The difference between these two is the ingredient Benzocaine plus the other brand starts at age five for children and can be used for canker sores. They are more expensive, not sugar-free and only contain 18 lozenges per box. I cannot find any mention of the caloric content in the Chloraseptic® Sore throat lozenges and the medicine taste kicks in a minute faster in these.

These lozenges are to be kept at room temperature and out of reach from children. The size and shape of the lozenge is like a lifesaver mint, but thicker and rounder. They are also smaller in height than the Chloraseptic® Sore throat lozenges. This is not candy and due to the ease of removing them from the blister pack need to be on a high shelf. There is always relief when I suck on a N’Ice Cherry Lozenges and the cough ceases to exist quickly each time. The menthol sensation is not too overwhelming and it stays with you for some time after finishing the lozenge. There might be some getting used to the taste at first, especially with children.
