Keeps babies out of trouble

My style of parenting does not look at play yards as a means of keeping the baby busy and out of the way. I was interested in the Superyard primarily for safety reasons. We live in a townhouse and our stairs do not have a rail installed yet. We want to build a built-in instead of a rail and the project has dragged on for a while. So in order to keep our crawling and soon-to-be-walking baby safe we needed a quick fix solution. We bought the Superyard XT with an additional 2 panel extension kit on Craigslist for $40, otherwise we would have paid $80 for it new.

This has turned out to be a great solution for our living room (a.k.a. play room, family room, movie theater). We don't use it as a 'cage' and instead use it to gate off an area of the living room and keep our daughter away from stairs and the kitchen. This way she doesn't feel like she is in a cage and still has the freedom to roam about in the area with the couch and television (see photo). Regardless I never really leave her alone, but without it she would be drawn to the stairs every time I turn around. She plays in this area while I cook and clean in the kitchen or when I play with her in the living room. It works for us because it is temporary and only needed until she learns to safely navigate the stairs.

The Superyard is sturdy when it is bent at an angle at each connection, you cannot set it up in a straight line or it will just fall over. So we have set it up in a zig zag shape. It is very light, which can be a good and bad thing. It will not contain older children because they can just pick it up. Even our 11 month old can pick it up somewhat. It is also very easy to move and drag across the floor. We have had to place heavy objects at each end to keep her from moving it so she can get out. Every once in a while though she still manages to get out of it, she is a smart and determined girl! The good thing is when she gets out I am either there, or if I am in the laundry area she comes and finds me herself. The fact that it is light though makes it really easy to move and take with you if needed. This is not something I would do, but you can use it in the yard, park, or beach. Of course, this can be great for pets as well, not just babies. I guess that is the reason I don't like to use it as a cage because I feel that babies shouldn't be treated like pets :P

Although this product has it's limitations, I am very pleased with it overall. I do think that it is overpriced however and it doesn't help that there are very few similar option available out there. I think it is great if you are facing a dilemma on how to keep you baby away from the Christmas tree, the fireplace, or the kitchen.
