Pros: unique markings allow measuring without looking at the side

Cons: not microwave-safe

The Bottom Line: By far the easiest measuring cup to use, the Oxo is a must-have despite its inability to be microwaved.

Measuring cups are a staple of any busy kitchen. And I'm a big fan of larger measuring cups because they are usually easier to pour and hold more stuff you need to measure. But the kind that have the measurements printed on the side can be a bit of a pain to use. So the good folks at Oxo made a measureing cup that doesn't require you to crane your neck down to see the line. Does this cup work as well as my standard Pyrex one?

Read on, dear reader...

•• What it is ••
The Oxo measuring cup is a 2 cup plastic measuring cup.

•• Features and Commentary ••
Pulling this cup out of the box, the first thing you'll notice is that it is very lightweight. Since it's made of plastic, it doesn't feel as solid in hand as a glass one. For some, that's a benefit. Certainly dropping this cup on the floor won't cause any damage or break. And if your foot comes in between the forces of gravity and the floor, it won't hurt as much as a heavy glass cup.

In typical Oxo fashion, the cup has an oversize handle with a plastic grip. This grip is harder plastic than most Oxo products. For some reason, the soft rubber handle that Oxo is known for is missing from this product. Despite this, the measuring cup is very comfortable to hold.

The key feature of this cup is the way the measurements are written. The cup is clear plastic and by definition, this allows me to see through it. The cup is molded such that there is a flat ridge running all the way down it at an angle. On the bottom of this ridge, the measurements are painted in red and white. Again, since the plastic is clear, I can see these measurements through the other side by simply looking into the cup. I don't need to crane my neck down to see any side-printed measurements. I can simply look into the cup. Combine this with a very angular spout and the cup is super easy to use and pour with.

The measuring cup has measurements for both metric and American standard and is incremented down to 1/4 measurements. Since I've not come across recipes that require 1/8 cup measurements, this does the trick for almost every cooking job I've had.

And finally, the measuring cup is top-rack dishwasher safe. I've run it through a zillion times and I've not seen any etching or warping of the plastic. As well, the handle has held up well. Essentially, there have been no ill effects due to running it through the dishwasher so many times.

Ah but not all is perfect in the land of Oxo. I've noticed some nicks and scratches on the paint that carries the measurements. Since there's no protective coating over this, it can easily get dinged in the normal process of cooking. And if your measurements fade away, then you have a useless measuring cup.Thankfully, the nicks and scratches have thus far been purely cosmetic. And again, the dishwasher has had no ill effects on this part.

And the only real drawback is that due the thin plastic-ness of the cup, it isn't microwave safe. This is a shame because I use the microwave to make rice. I boil the water in a measuring cup and then pour the rice in per the instructions. Unfortunately, the Oxo cup can't be nuked, so I have to use some other method, usually the good old Pyrex. Don't let that dissuade you, though. While you can't nuke anything in it, the cup holds up just fine to having boiling liquids poured into it.

•• Conclusion ••
By far the easiest measuring cup to use, the Oxo is a must-have despite its inability to be microwaved.
