The Bottom Line: This brand quickly became my favorite for many reasons, and out transition to the next size is ensuring that it stays a favorite.

When I shared with family and friends that I was pregnant, one of the things I'd often be teased about was diapers: how much I'd have fun spending money on them and changing them and smelling them throughout the house and keeping them everywhere. I knew these things would be true, but I didn't have a clue about diapers at the time, in fact I'd only ever changed on by myself once... and that was only weeks before I conceived. Now, having a 6 week old, I can say I've got a bit more experience with diapers... though I can also say I've got a long way to go before they're out of my life. While I haven't yet tried many brands and styles I have sampled a few, and my choice diaper by far is Pampers Swaddlers.

About the Product

Pampers Swaddlers New Baby diapers claim to be blankie soft. They have soft, stretchy sides and soft, overlapping fasteners. The diapers have a fabric mesh liner to absorb liquid. The product features a small variety of Sesame Street characters. There is also a stripe going down the front of the diaper that is yellow when dry and blue when wet (though not all Pampers Swaddlers have this feature). The newborn size (which this review focuses on) has a notch, or dip in the front of the diaper to avoid the umbilical cord and to make cord care easier. The newborn size are made for babies up to 10 pounds.

Ingredients

Yes, there are some that Pampers claims is gentle on the skin: Petrolatum, stearyl alcohol, aloe barbadensis leaf extract. They sound mild and harmless enough to me.

My Experience

When I first changed my son's diaper I was naturally a little uncomfortable. I was afraid I wouldn't get all the waste (you know, the poop and pee) off of him, and this was especially disconcerting to me in the beginning, considering the thick, tar-like (hard to get rid of) maconium babies produce in the beginning. I was also afraid I would not put the diaper on correctly (I heard funny stories of my dad and many other people putting diapers on babies backwards) or would put it on too tight and hurt the baby. I was also afraid of the diaper leaking, and of being peed -or worse, pooped- on. All of these fears were justified, but as it turns out the ease of use of Pampers helped these fears subside for me.

The diaper really did feel as soft as a blanky, and I felt good knowing that it would be soft and comfortable (well, as comfortable as a diaper can be) on my son's skin. The majority of the inside of the diaper is made of a soft cloth-like, mesh material that absorbs pee and poop quickly. There are times Trent (my baby boy) has peed into the diaper as I'm putting it on him and the liquid is almost immediately absorbed. At this point, because I'm breastfeeding, his bowel movements are fairly frequent and rather liquid-y; his poop absorbs as much as it can into the diaper fairly quickly, and the diaper seems to hold even his biggest "loads" (if you will). The diaper has two bands of elastic to surround his legs; the inner band is a tighter, more form fitting elastic but is an extension of the blankie material and is still quite soft and gentle on the baby's skin, while the outer band is a little looser and more of a "just-in-case" deal. Until Trent started out-growing the newborn size, the elastic bands never left marks suggesting the diaper was too tight on him, even when I would fasten the diaper tighter than I thought I should. The double-bands ease my mind and seem to prevent more frequent leaks. Speaking of leaks, we do have them occasionally, but they happen more often from the top and back of the diaper. There is no elastic or other type of material at the top and back of the diaper, and when my baby lays on his back for a long amount of time poop sometimes tends to creep up and out. This is probably my biggest gripe about this diaper. I love wetness indicator stripe; because Trent's poo is usually liquidy it even indicates when he has pooped but not peed, though this may not work as well for other consumers. The yellow closure tabs stick to the character band easily and hold fast, but are also easy to un-stick if I need to readjust. The sides of the diaper where the closure tabs are is also stretchy and has made for easy adjustment as Trent has grown; this stretchiness has also helped us avoid the diaper being too tight.

There isn't much I don't like about this diaper. The leakage that happens at the top and back of the diaper is perhaps my biggest dislike. Trent rarely gets diaper rash with these diapers, and when he does it goes away quickly with a small dab of Desitin. The blankie-soft claim holds true (I can hardly believe how soft the material is, both inside and out), and the mesh liner whisks away dampness quickly and efficiently. The elastic bands are gentle but effective, and the color-change stripe is probably one of my favorite features. Trent, Daddy and I all three enjoy the Sesame Street characters featured on the diapers. The front band of the diaper features a small variety of Sesame Street duos, and Daddy and I both like to tell the baby which characters he is wearing when we replace his diaper, making changing time a bit more fun for everyone involved.

I was provided with some Pampers diapers in the hospital, and many of the diapers I was given as gifts were Pampers brand, which led me to believe they are a top-choice brand. My use over the past nearly two months of the Pampers Swaddlers NewBaby Newborn size and our transition to the size one as well as my use of a few other brands has ensured me that so far they are my favorite. While I do have a few slight problems with the diapers I've found that no diaper is perfect, and so far these come closest to perfection.

Pampers Swaddlers have eased my diaper-changing fears and makes the diaper changing process much easier for me. I will continue to purchase this brand and this type of diaper, and in fact have begun transition baby Trent to the next size successfully. The price is more expensive than many brands, but is definitely worth the extra money.
