Obsessed With Sound: A Philips DS8530/37 Fidelio Docking Speaker Review
May 14, 2012
The Philips DS8530/37 Fidelio Docking Speaker, made in China, comes with a headphone cable & remote. PureDigital sound processing delivers clear and crisp sound while the tuned bass pipes add deep and tight bass reproductions providing exceptional audio quality. The modern appearing docking speaker, measuring 17" wide, 6" tall 6" deep, consists of a black plastic backing and black metal mesh front. A power port and auxiliary input are located on the back, and a brushed metallic ring on the front serves as the docking area with a 30-pin connector and includes volume + and - buttons.
The iPhone / iPad App
Using the Philips' iDevice DockStudio app is required to utilize many features and get the most out of the Philips DS8530/37 Fidelio Docking Speaker. Controlling the Dynamic Bass Boost (DBB) and equalizer settings can only be set through the app while physically connected. The DockStudio app features also includes playback controls, a multi-function alarm clock with sleeptimer and alarm, music collection browsing, sharing via Facebook and Twitter, access to more than 7,000 internet radio stations and podcasts using TuneIn radio, plus displays current local weather conditions.
I'm indifferent to using the DockStudio app. The alarm clock requires the app to be running for use, browsing and listening to the internet radio stations and podcasts is tedious, and the app doesn't integrate with Pandora accounts. Plus the weather feature tells me I don't have an internet connection on my iPad, even though I do. Philips attempts to enrich the Fidelio experience may successfully do so for some, but not for me. If it weren't for the audio setting capabilities, I would remove the app from my iDevices.
The Fidelio DS8530/37
Setting up the Fidelio DS8530/37 docking speaker is as simple as plugging it into an electrical socket. The included Quick Start Guide uses nothing but images to indicate how to use the docking speaker and is most likely unneeded. Even though the docking speaker should work without removing protective cases, my iPad's Belkin cover must be removed to attach. However, docking my iPhone to the Fidelio DS8530/37 doesn't require removing the case. Once docked the remote provides typical music player options, which also works with Pandora.
The Fidelio DS8530/37 docking speaker isn't designed to include Bluetooth connectivity. However, it's painfully obvious this common feature is missing. As a result, I must choose between relinquishing all control to the docking speaker and using my device for other purposes. At the current MSRP, Bluetooth connectivity should be included.
The Fidelio DS8530/37 is a stylish, modern looking docking speaker with great sound. Plus the lackluster DockStudio app provides expanded usability and is a tool for setting the various sound options. However, the lack of Bluetooth capability would be reason enough for me to consider purchasing an alternate docking station. If this missing feature isn't important to you, the Fidelio DS8530/37 docking speaker is worthy of your consideration.
PROS: Great sound & Dynamic Bass Boost Remote control Full, rich sound at all volumes Modern black mesh design One-year limited warranty
CONS: Lackluster app No Bluetooth connectivity
