Popeye's chicken sneaked into the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex while I was living out of state. My family moved back to find several of them hanging around. The first one I went to was on 14th street in Plano and I must say I was in love. The food was fresh and tasty and different from your run of the mill chicken place.
First let me say that I always use the drive through service. I could not well comment on the interior decor. The exteriors of the buildings seem to be well maintained. The color scheme of the exterior is bright and appealing. The parking lots are kept clean. From that point of view I'd rate them highly. I've certainly been through other drive-ups where I've lost my appetite by the time I got to my food.
I would say that Popeye's is somewhat more expensive than our other local chicken establishments, but on occasion I'm willing to pay the extra.
I generally get a big family pack of chicken with side dishes. The chicken is very consistently well prepared, seems to always be very fresh and minimally greasy and has a definite spicy "zing" to it. The fries that we get are spicy also and appear to be battered as well. My personal favorite is the red beans and rice. The food is very good. WHEN I can get it!
The issue I have with Popeye's is the service. Where the food is consistently very good, the service has been consistently very poor. I have encountered this at a number of my local locations. I get very aggravated every time I go there. I stay away long enough that I forget how bad the service is and remember how good the food is and then I go back. At the location nearest to my home, I'm able to be served two out of three times that I go. The other time I'm told that they are out of something, or I will have to wait 20 minutes for another batch to be ready. I've even been told flat out that they weren't serving with more than half an hour until their posted closing time. The staff is also consistently less than congenial--BUT they can COOK!
It's difficult to have such a love-hate relationship with a fast-food place. It's a toss up. I'd go there all the time if the service was better. As it is, I go there just for occasional variety. Hmmm. I wonder whose loss it is?
