Pros: Sturdy Steel Handlebars Smooth Ride Good traction on the sidewalks
Cons: Too low to the ground - hard to get out of.
The Bottom Line: A fun street racer for slighly bigger kids who have outgrown their original big wheels. This is a sportier more durable model.
So my five year old still loves his big wheel. Most big wheels are only made for kids up to five years old. We looked around and found the Big Flyer - perfect! This can handle kids up to 7 years old and 60 pounds. We ordered through Amazon and it arrived a few days.
I am familiar with the Radio Flyer products. We have had several products over the years and they were always good quality. We had had the steel wagon, the wooden horse, and a tricycle. The package was one big box that weight 16 pounds. Inside the box was the frame of the flyer. Included were wheels, pedal rod, steering fork and a couple of bags with parts. There was a directions pamphlet.
Putting this thing together was a nightmare. It took all night and used all of my energy. Thankfully my son had gone to sleep and didn't see me lose my cool assembling this. The first problem were the directions, no word directions, just pictures. And they left off the "4" in the series of pictures. There was a 1, 2, 3, and no 4 and then 5, 6, 7. Arrrghhh!
You will need a hammer, plyers and a Phillips Head screw driver to complete this. Basically the directions were useless and I had to assemble and then repeat everything a couple of different ways to ensure I got it right.
The next morning, my son wakes up, sees his Big Flyer and takes it for a spin around the neighborhood. There is a tall flag on the back which I like for the safety aspect. Cars can see the flag flying when he drives by. Of course I am always with him but its nice to have the comfort of knowing that drivers can see him better.
The handlebars are made from steel which is nice and the parts are of good quality. It's sturdy plastic with the exception of the handlebars and pedal rod. There seat can be adjusted to one of three positions which make the ride comfortable and he has plenty of room to grow.
The front tire is wide and has a super grip on the sidewalk. The front wheel is indeed big which makes it super easy to peddle and steer. He is able to go pretty fast in his big flyer which is a plus for him.The tire grips the sidewalk well has good traction. The back two wheels are wide which give it smooth handling and easy turns. He can easily maneuver over cracks in the sidewalks with no issues. His old smaller big wheel had trouble with the same cracks and faults.
My only real complaint is that this flyer is a low rider or chopper style. It sits very close to the ground with the handlebars are raised. It's hard for my son to get out of the big wheel once he is finished. Currently he rolls out of it but we're working on how to actually step out.
Bottom line - a safe and fun toy for bigger kids who still enjoy big wheel riding.
UPDATE - A red pedal was inadvertently broken during the installation. I called the company and was send a replacement in the mail for free in 3 days. Great customer service!
