Just Keep Peddlin': A Runtastic Black Bike Case for iPhone 4, 4S, 5 Review
Jun 17, 2013
These days, it seems I use my phone for everything but making calls. I keep up on email, interact with social media sites, shop online, control household electronics, and train for endurance events. My favored app is great for running and has a cycling option, although I rely on a bicycle computer since my mobile phone would be strapped to my arm or in my pocket.
The Runtastic iPhone bike case, made in China, plus bike app turns the iPhone into a bicycle computer. The case, mounting bracket, and other pieces weigh about 3 ounces total. Installation requires finding a spot on either the neck or handle bars to secure a small 1.25 inch square mounting bracket with zip ties. The remaining set up entails customizing the case to fit your model iPhone, including adding a home button overlay and small round tab to easily activate the home button. Additionally, the free app can be installed; then during the activation process, the pro features are activated and a 7 day trial Runtastic gold membership begins.
I found the activation process confusing and am a bit annoyed by the automatically started 7 day trial membership. A small pamphlet found inside the package indicates access to the pro cycle app version, and then requires downloading the free app where the pro options are unlocked during activation. Supposedly the only difference is the ability to track speed, cadence, and heart rate. It would have been nice to know the trial gold membership would have started immediately so I could have postponed activation.
There was no option to start the trial at a later date; being out of town to hike Half Dome in Yosemite, I wasn't able to take advantage of the membership's features. During this time, activating the gold membership is offered at a reduced rate, and may be worth the expense if you're likely to purchase training plans. There are other benefits; however the webpage describing the difference in membership plans was replaced with large buttons to encourage purchasing the gold membership, and clearly prevented me from knowing what the benefits were beyond the first time I was shown. Otherwise the website appears to be a companion site to the app in the same way other well known sports apps interact with their websites.
The protective foam padded case, when properly configured, holds the iPhone securely. The only access points are on the top for the headphone jack outlet, and on the bottom for charger connection and speaker access. There is also a button on top for the turning on/off the power. Volume must be controlled on the display since there is no access or buttons on the sides. One side is the hinge, and the other is the locking mechanism.
Fortunately, anyone who may dislike using Runtastic doesn't have to. The sturdy case is easy to install, keeps my iPhone safe and snug, and puts the stats where I can easily and safely see them. However, these benefits don't add up to good value at the current price. I wouldn't spend more than about fourteen dollars on this case.
PROS: Tool free mounting Easily switch between portrait and landscape mounting Splash and shock proof Works with runtastic sports and fitness apps 2 year limited warranty
CONS: The Runtastic app could be improved (not required) Inadequate instructions Overpriced
