Pros: Protects toddlers from outlets.

Cons: Not fool proof.

The Bottom Line:

This is a great safetly product to use to prevent toddlers from getting shocked as a result of playing with outlets.

As a parent, one of the number one concerns you have is the safety of your child(ren). As infants and toddlers, there are so many concerns that will develop as a result of their own mile stones. As wonderful as it is to see them become mobile and begin to creep, crawl, and walk, these new abilities can make for some dangerous situations. They now have the ability to see these areas that they were curious about but could not find a way to get to them; that is now in the past and they are ready and willing to explore the world around them. Of course at these young ages, they do not understand the dangers or remember every time they are told "no." In some cases even if they know they are not supposed to play with something, curiosity can get the best of them. One of the most common areas that can attract a child are the outlets set all over the walls.

Not only are outlets at a level that is fully visible to them, but they have holes in them. As toddlers enjoy putting these in and out, they will have a natural curiosity to see what they can fit into the holes. Toddlers will often see adults plug things into an outlet and will want to be and do what they do. In addition to being fully accessible, there is often at least one outlet in each room increasing the amount of exposure they have to the outlets.

In hopes of preventing a serious or fatal accident we purchased a pack of Safety 1st Press 'n Pull Plug Protectors. We purchased and began using these plug protectors when my daughter was about 9 months old. Around this time, she became very mobile and expressed a higher interest in her environment. We purchased a 24-pack for around $3.50 at the store. These can be found in most retail stores that offer a baby sections.

Safety 1st Press 'n Pull Plug Protectors are made of white plastic and are approximately 1.5 x 1 inch. They have the shape of an eye although at each corner there are two circular cutouts that are in two different sizes. These cut-outs are equivalent to the size of a single electric cord. The front of the plug protector is flat with a small level in the center of it that is used for removing the protector when there is a need to use the outlet. This 1.4 inch level run almost the entire height of the plug protector. There is a small rounded left at the end of the level. On the back there are two plastic prongs that hold the cover inside the outlet.

Using the Safety 1st Press 'n Pull Plug Protectors is extremely easy and you will find that it is more difficult to take them out of the packaging. The plug protector should be inserted in an unused socket until it is play against the socket. The plug protector fits firmly and is not easily removed. The prongs are the same sized and will fit any American stand socket. When you have a need to use the outlet, pressing the level forces the entire plug protector out allowing for it to be completely taken out. Minimal force is needed to express the plug protectors with the use of the lever. It is possible to pull it out of the outlet by placing something thin and hard between the outlet and protector, but it is extremely difficult. The two circular cutouts can be used to attach the plug protectors to the cord to prevent them from being displaced. When inserting or removing the plug protectors basic common sense safety rules should be followed such as having dry hands. If the plugs do not fit firmly, discontinue use and have an electrician exam the outlet to ensure that they integrity of the outlet is okay.

Fortunately my daughter has never shown a big interest in outlets and has only made one strong attempt to access them. I had stepped out of the room to get something and was back in only a matter of a few seconds. During this time, she had gone over to the outlet and was trying to remove the outlet cover. She has managed to pull it slightly out but she was not able to fully remove it. In her other hand, she held one of her plastic spoons. I have no doubt that if she would be been success in removing the plug protector, she would have tried to put her play spoon in the outlet. I don’t know if anything would have happened if she managed to get the spoon or handle into the socket, but I certainly do not want to find out. My daughter was almost two years of ago when she did this.

The Safety 1st Press 'n Pull Plug Protectors should be used as long as they act a deterrent and should be discontinued once the child has mastered the art of removing them. The plugs will not prevent a child from playing with an outlet rather it slows them down and gives valuable seconds to prevent a serious or fatal accident. They should not substitute for adult supervision.
