Not all pens are created equal. Sharpie comes through with a great pen!

Pros: No skipping, smearing, or fading. Ink flows evenly. Bold. No leaking.

Cons: Point is quite fine, a tad pricey for stick pens

The Bottom Line: Sharpie Fine Point Black Ink Pens write smoothly and evenly. They never skip, leak or bleed. Bold ink doesn't smudge. Great for everyday use.

I am a pen fanatic. I used to steal pens from doctor's offices when I was a kid. And not such a kid, but I ask first now so I guess I'm not a thief. I write a lot in journals and on paper and pens mean a lot to me. I have some pricey pens but I like to pick up some cheaper ones as well for everyday use.

When Sharpie Pens were first introduced, I had to get my hands on them. I love Sharpie markers and to have a pen that was a Sharpie?  Dreamy!

I like these pens although super fine points  and black ink aren't my favorites.

Manufacturer's Info

Packaging

These pens come blister packed in sets of four but you can now buy them alone or in larger packages. They come in blue, green, red, and black ink. The black ink pens are gray with a black pull off top. The tip is very fine and looks like a marker tip but writes like a pen. No one would think that the ink was marker ink and it isn't. It's pen ink. In a marker like pen. The black ink is bold and dries quickly. The blue is disappointing and almost a medium blue color that I refuse to use even though I much prefer blue ink over black.

My Use

I actually received two packages of each color as gifts last year. THAT's how much of a pen fanatic I am. My husband and sister both bought me some when they saw them because they knew... They knew my obsession for pens would take over and I would buy at least that many when I saw them.

The pens are quite thin but comfortable in the hand. They're not fancy by any means and don't have rubber or ridges on them to make writing less stressful on the hand. But they write like a dream.

The black ink flows out nicely and never leaves "ink globs" on paper. It never skips and I have not found myself having to scribble on a blank sheet of paper to get the ink going when I wanted to use a Sharpie Fine Point Pen.

The ink dries fast and, indeed, it is completely smear-proof once it is dry. During the short time between writing and dying, the ink could smear but is not overly prone to doing so.

I like that I don't have to press down on the pen to get a nice smooth line and that writing is effortless. I am not a fan of black ink and I don't think any of my old journals have even one page of black inked writings in them. However, the Sharpie Fine Point Pen in blue is a terrible shade. It's faded out and too light. I hate it. Since I like the pen, I use the black and it's growing on me.

Possibly the reason I hated black ink pens was because they seemed to smear more than blue. Not Sharpie Pens! Gone are the days of having my fingers touch the ink only to smear everything and mess my hands up. My hands never have ink on them no matter how much I write with these pens.

They last a long time and can be tossed out when the ink finally runs out. I definitely prefer a little bit of a thicker line but again, I'm getting used to the cleanness of a fine line pen. Cooler still is that these pens don't bleed through even thin paper. You can write on two sided forms or in journals with no worries of ink bleed through. I love that!

These pens are everything I hoped for and they don't fade over time, at least not over the year or so that I have had and used them. My first writings look as sharp and as dark as ever. I'll check back in 10 years and update you on how they look then!

These pens can be used for everyday writing, journaling, lists, and for labeling although they aren't like Sharpie markers and can't write on plastic very well.

In all, the Sanford Sharpie Pen 1742661 Fine Point 4 Pack Black has served me well. The pens are not top of the line by any means but they are very reliable and have never leaked, a real pet peeve of mine (and probably everyone's).

I definitely will continue using these pens in black. I'm waiting for Sanford to realize that the blue pen is unacceptable to those who actually want their words seen on paper. It's just such a light, dull blue. Disappointing.

Buying Info

These pens are available at mass-market stores and drugstores on and offline. They are also in office supply stores. They come in a variety of sized packages and also come in mixed colors (black, blue, red, and green). The 4 Pack is around $7.00, a little pricey for stick pens but I believe they're worth it.

Conclusion

Sanford Sharpie Black Fine Point Pens are NOT markers. They are pens made by a great marker company. They have what looks a bit like marker tips but the ink is pen ink and the line is very fine. These pens don't skip or leak, they don't form a pool of black if the tip is pressed against paper, and the ink is permanent. Versatile and simple, Sharpie Fine Point Pens in Black are great for everyday writing as well as journaling. 4 stars.
