Great Choice for Mountain Biking

Pros: Comfortable, long-lived, easy to get off the saddle on technical trails.

Cons: No rail guide marks, slightly more difficult to install.

The Bottom Line: A good choice in saddles for the mountain biker looking for comfort and ease of use in technical descents.

Billed as a mountain bike saddle, this review encompasses approximately five years of use with this saddle over the course of two different mountain bikes. I will try to highlight various aspects of this saddle to assist you if this is the correct saddle for you.

Riding Comfort: This area would be the most subjective. I would rate this as one of the most comfortable saddles that I have used. Comparing it to previous saddles that I have used such as the Selle Italia Flite Classic, Selle Italia Flite SLR and Bontrager Lite, the San Marco is more comfortable than either Selle Italia and is just as comfortable as the Bontrager. This is due to the design of the nose area. It is shorter than either Selle Italia Flite saddle which reduced the pressure in my perineal region. Just an FYI, Bontrager saddles are actually made by Selle San Marco and can offer an inexpensive alternative in comfortable saddles.

Ease of installation: It is slightly more difficult due to the extra leather slightly covering the rails.

Adjustments: Fore and aft adjustments are slightly less with this saddle. This is due to the shorter rails available when compared to Selle Italia Flite offerings. It wasn't a problem for me but if you decide to try this saddle for time-trialing on the road, you may not have enough rail length to be comfortable. In a mountain bike situation as this saddle was originally designed for, it should not be a problem. Also, unlike other saddle manufacturers, the rails do not have printed guide numbers to help you quickly locate where the best location to install the saddle. You'll need to mark your best rail spot if and when you decide to take the saddle off the seatpost for any reason.

Field Use: Probably the best out there. This is partly due to two designs inherent to the saddle. First, having shaved off sides at the seat area helps you greatly to slide off the saddle when those steep technical descents are coming. Second, for climbing, the raised seat area acts like a support platform to give you more power and comfort for those long ascents up the mountain.

Weight: On their site Selle San Marco advertises this saddle at 245 grams. My gram scale showed an actual weight of 243 grams. In comparison, the current Selle Italia Flite Gel saddles weighed in on my gram scale at 264 grams, the Selle Italia Flite SLR weighed in at 140 grams.

Longevity: I am still using it to this day, now in it's fifth year of continuous use. Believe me when I say I do not baby this saddle. It has seen several MTB races, numerous creek crossings, harsh sun exposure, dust, etc. over the last five years. The leather on the saddle shows some signs of wear but is still going strong. This is much better than my previous Selle Italia Flite saddle which only lasted three years in the same riding environment.

Conclusions: If you are a mountain biker looking for a comfortable saddle that will support you in your technical endeavors, you need to look at this saddle. I highly recommend this saddle for you and the plus side is that this saddle will last you a very long time. One less thing to replace! Hope this information was helpful for you and happy riding!
