Shur-Line Wall Prep Sticky Roller - Clean your walls!

Pros: Takes off dirt, hair and crud without damaging the walls

Cons: May not entirely necessary to pre-clean your walls

The Bottom Line: If you want to do it right and have your paint look its best, this is a great product.

It's amazing to me the number of products you can buy to simply paint your walls. I figured all you needed was a roller, a tray and a can of paint. Oh my how I was wrong. Apparently, it's important to clean your walls ahead of time. This is where the Shur-Line Wall Prep Sticky Roller comes in. Does it clean your wall suitably prior to painting? Is it really necessary?

Read on, dear reader....

When you purchase this thing, you're going to think that it looks suspiciously like a good old lint roller. There's a good reason for that. It is. However this roller is quite a bit larger than a standard one as it is designed to fit onto a standard paint roller. And sure enough, it does. Simply slip the tube onto an empty paint roller and go to town.

If you don't know what a lint roller is, it's simply a roll of really sticky paper. You roll it on (the wall in this case) and it pulls all the dirt and lint off. When the sticky paper gets full and stops being sticky, simply grab the corner and pull. One layer of paper will magically unroll from the tube for easy disposal leaving a fresh layer of stickiness for continued rolling.

If you look at a wall, it doesn't really appear dirty. But if you have stucco or textured walls, you'll be surprised at how much this roller can pick up. It doesn't take much more than a single wall for it to become full of dust, dirt, hair, and cobwebs. It's also rather humbling as it shows you how lousy a homeowner you are. You mean you don't dust your wall regularly??

While the roller pulled off lots of dust and dirt, it never once damaged the wall. We have cruddy cheap paint that came with the house, and even a sponge with water will start to take it off. But the Shur-Line Wall Prep Sticky Roller did no such thing. Not a bit of paint was taken off.

I don't recall how many sheets the roller comes with as I tossed the packaging, but I'm pretty sure it was between 25 and 30. This is plenty to roll almost an entire house stem to stern.

But really, is such a thing necessary? Won't the paint just roll over it and cover it up? Probably. And unless someone gets up close, they probably won't see the even the larger things such as hair or cobwebs. But there's something to be said for doing the job right. The paint will stay on better and look great closeup and last a lot longer.

Now I'm looking at my walls and thinking ewwww lol....I never knew such a thing existed! What if you just want to clean your walls without painting them? Does this make a big difference in appearance? I would think so...

Also, I'm curious, did you use Mythic Paint? @EcoMama's review of it has me thinking that if ever I need to paint a room, I'm going that route!
