Great Get Away

Pros: Beautiful city, historic

Cons: hot weather!

The Bottom Line: Bottom Line - a very fun and thoughtful city. Well suited to those with kids, couples, seniors or just about anyone!

We wanted to take a short vacation that wasn't too far from our hometown of Georgia. We decided to try Florida but not the typical touristy beachy towns.

Saint Augustine was selected because of it's rich and diverse background and I'm so glad!!! It's very easy to get to off the highway as well. Basically one chooses where to stay based on "historic area" or "beach area" due to proximity. We chose the beach area as we wanted quick and easy access to the Ocean. The beach area is very close to the historic area too.

Beaches are nice, like any other Florida beach but what distinguishes St. Augustine from other beach towns is of course the history. Ponce De Leon landed here and his museum is really a treat. It could use some updating but overall a thrill. There were several peacocks and peafowls roaming his landing area with museums interspersed.

The rest of the city is very charming old Spanish. We simply walked for most of our days there and had a lovely time just exploring. There are many many shops with antiques, paintings, funky art and just cool things.

Of course seafood rules there and you can get very good food with picturesque scenery thrown in. We ate one Mexican meal overlooking the Ocean and it was very relaxing just to watch the ocean and tourists ambling by.

St. Augstine had fishing marinas, boats to rent, museums to see, forts to visit and it is simply a laid back Florida town.

An enthuisiastic recommendation from a recent visitor
