The Bottom Line: An absolute worthwhile investment for anyone who uses their computer a lot - either in a design or their solid black!
I'll freely admit - I am a huge World of Warcraft geek. I have t-shirts, pins, keyrings.... you name it, I probably have it (or want it!). So when I saw this super slick World of Warcraft limited edition mousepad, I *had* to have it.
For those of you who aren't familiar with World of Warcraft, it's an online fantasy role playing video game. You get to play as elves, orcs, humans, undead and more and fight against all sorts of unsavory other characters. And you're doing all this with millions of other real people playing at the same time. Pretty cool, right? But this review isn't about the game, just this neat mouse pad, so I'll stop going on about all the fantasy fun for now.
I had been getting along just fine with a five dollar plain black mousepad that I had gotten several years ago. It did the job that a mousepad is meant to do - meaning it made my laser mouse track along nicely - but it wasn't fancy or anything. And it was rather small, being only about 6" x 8", the size of your "average" mouse pad.
Well, Steel Series is known for making some pretty slick computer and gaming gear, so I was very willing to give up the old boring pad for something that would be.... well..... ok I admit it - I bought it for the flashy graphic on the front, because really, a mousepad either works or it doesn't, right?
I vastly underestimated this mouse pad!
For starters, it's massive in size compared to your typical pad. It measures in at 11" x 12.5" making it ideal for pretty much anything as you'll never "fall off" the edge of this pad with your mouse. Plus, it's super thin at only 2mm thick, so there is no discomfort from your wrist and hand being slightly elevated as it would be with a thicker pad. Because it's so thin, this pad is also ideal for travelling or for portability within a laptop bag, as you can fold or roll it up and it will always bounce back to it's orignal shape.
The next best thing about this pad? The backing. It's fully backed with a strong slightly textured rubberized fabric that stays in place no matter what you have it on. From my wood desk to the glossy coffee table, anywhere you put it, this mouse pad stays where it's put! There's really nothing worse than moving your mouse around, and your hand goes one way and the pad goes the other. With this pad, you can be sure it's staying until you want it moved.
The top of this pad is a slightly slick fabric with a highly detailed art piece of the Lich King (the ultimate boss) from World of Warcraft. It's smooth so that the mouse glides nicely and it doesn't irritate my hand. I also learned that it's waterproof! Although it's not advertised as being waterproof, I have spilled many a drink on this pad and it cleans up nicely with no staining or stickiness. If you're not a Warcraft fan, there's a large variety of other designs that this pad is available in. As mentioned on the Steel Series website, this pad surface is ideal for any ball, laser, or optical mouse.
At only $14.99, I felt this mousepad was an absolute steal! Considering I paid a third of that price for a much smaller, far inferior mouse pad, this was definitely money well spent. I've been using it for over six months and I can't find a single thing wrong with it, and it shows no signs of wear.
This pad is a great gift for any computer gamer in your life! They do offer an additional Warcraft themed design, but you can also choose from another half-dozen game-specific designs, as well as solid black. It is available from the Steel Series website as well as select gaming and computer retailers.
