Pros: Reliable flavor

Cons: Significantly more bland than the bold it implies

The Bottom Line: It isn't a bad beer, just not good enough for the billing. I recommend it with reservations due mainly to cost and availability.

If you like it you know that bitter is a difficult flavor to balance, but there is a fairly wide room for error in India Pale Ales. IPAs are separated by the sweet ales by the extra hops used. Most IPAs do not use enough hops so the balance favors the sweet side. Terrapin’s Hopsecutioner couches its self-praise by saying: “You may lose your hophead over this one!” Ehhh, not so much. If I have a hophead, it is still where I left it.

It pours somewhat cloudy and more golden than the amber of IPAs like Bass Ale. The initial smells indicate it will probably be very bitter. The taste isn’t quite what the bottle or the aroma imply.

The taste is interesting though. Hopsecutioner is a see-saw, teetering between the slight syrup sweet and the hops bitterness. Both flavors are fine and start out somewhat strong but the flavor fades very quickly. In that way, I can say the beer is “clean” but this is an IPA, if I wanted clean I’d drink Corona. It is not pricy, but it isn’t inexpensive and ultimately it just doesn’t quite live up to its billing.

It is a totally average beer.

For another Georgia brewery’s IPA, pick up Sweet Water IPA ; it is a good beer by almost any measure, and a little less expensive.
