This is quite a well written book by a first time novelist. It concerns a series of killings of people in Chicago who seem to be murdered when the Cubs lose a ball game. The police are stymied, and when one of their task force, a reformed alcoholic named Slats, ventures suggestions and ideas, they tend to disregard them.

Slats has problems of his own. After preventing a Mafia war with his reasoning and detective skills, he accidentally kills a small child while taking down a mass murderer. This leads him into a downward spiral of drunkenness which adversely affects his job, and costs him his wife and daughter. He finally pulls himself together, but is it too late to live down his reputation as someone on which his police partners can not rely.

The plot moves along at a good pace, and it appears to be up to Slats to discover the killer's reason for the attacks, and how they can be prevented. Major League baseball is involved, and attempts are made to assist the Cubs in winning, but the killer sees through the idea and more deaths happen.

That's about all of the plot that I fell able to reveal, but I strongly suggest that you read this book; it's one that I'm sure you'll enjoy very much.
