Pros: ......

Cons: ......

The Bottom Line: ______________

You can take your meow and shove it up that dogz fanny! I admit it, I’m a sucker for fun loving games. At one time I had more stuff happening on my desktop than it was feasibly possible for me to handle. In fact, I hated to even get online cause I was so busy watching all the activity on my desktop.

Yep, had that Bonzi buddy, that squawking parrot that won’t leave you alone, although his questions are pretty cool. I also had some stripper gal and little koala bear, forget where that one came from – some website that starts with an “O”, similar to Oshkosh. I also had this cool virtual cat that paraded around all over my Word pages while I typed and kept falling from the top of the screen to the bottom – left paw prints everywhere it went.

Then I got Catz & Dogz™ from Mindscape/Learning Company. The company has changed hands now or has been absorbed by some big mucky muck, but I still have those darn animals. On top of that, I bought it for myself – sucka!

Catz & Dogz ™ are your own, private, interactive, virtual pets. Not a litter box or pooper scooper needed and they come with their own food and toys. And they make noise. Oh yeah, they make noise. Did I mention they make noise? They call this a game, they are sick.

Software is simple, a disk for Catz and a disk for Dogz, download is quick and simple – let the adoption process begin. You browse the pound and pick out your cute little puppy [I’ll get to those kittens later] and – aw, doesn’t it look sweet – and you feed it, you water it, you play with it. It nudges around, climbing all over everything, peeks around the edges of your papers while you are typing. Just a general pain in the patootie.

Each Dogz has their own quirks and personality. You can only adopt one Dogz at a time which is really a God send – all that darn barking and demanding food and the friggin water bowl is always empty.

And then there were ….. Catz …..

Uh, huh, Catz. They m-e-o-w, even when I turned my sound off I could still hear that meow. Similar to that feeling you have once a tooth has been pulled, you still feel it. Catz have toys too, and food and water [probably milk not water but who’s counting?]. Unlike real life cats, these Catz are very demanding. They want and require your attention. You know, a real life cat will flip you the finger in a heartbeat, unless THEY want to be cuddled. Much like Iguanas in that sense – but that’s a different story.

They have clothes, toys, playpens and feeding supplies. You can even make - God forbid - it your wallpaper on your computer. There are interactive scenarios. When you get bored with your current pet, return it to the pound and get a new one. Each has its own distinctive sound and characteristics and each has its own play habits and feeding habits.

Catz & Dogz are fun for about …… oh …… 3 minutes and then you start looking for the section on your computer drive that allows you to add/delete programs. Which I promptly did.

What these beasts need:
90 MHz or faster processor
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, or later
32 MB RAM
125 MB hard disk space
CD-ROM drive
256-color or better video
Sound Blaster or compatible sound card and speakers (optional) - I find the fact that speakers are optional a hoot..... oh, maybe they mean the entire sound system - grin.

Once you have loaded the initial program into your hard drive and registered with Big Brother, you have the capability to enhance and upgrade to even higher levels of insanity.

Actually, I can't fault the program. It is a good one and the graphics are fun and fine, just irritating. I would recommend this product for a child, not adult {or for the child in all of us but you'll soon be bored). It would be a good learning tool for young ones to teach the responsibility of caring for a pet, while learning some useful skills on the computer as well. In addition, it is desktop activated, so they don't need to be online to play with the critters.

In the meantime, my petz are available for a small fee if you are interested.
