Theraflu has a Vapor Cough Patch in Menthol Scent

Pros: these are over the counter, good for eight hours

Cons: no expiration date can be found, only one can be worn at a time.

The Bottom Line: Finally a vapor cough patch is back on the market.

Parents around the country scrambled when Triaminic discontinued and recalled in June of 2006 their cough patches in the menthol and cherry scents. Most kids get coughs when they return to school in the fall, so this went unnoticed until September when people went to their local drug store chains to pick up another box and found they were gone.

There were some people selling boxes on ebay. I had two boxes stashed in my earthquake kit, which was a relief for me as this was the only product I could use on my nonverbal autistic son to stop coughs and help him sleep through the night.

I learned months later about a product through a company called Naturopatch and started ordering their eucalyptus patches that were sold in a tin like sucrets. These worked out well but were expensive, and I had to wait for them to be shipped from Vermont.

This year Theraflu Vapor Patch came on the market. A box of six aroma patches cost $7.00 at Rite Aid or Walgreens. I have not checked yet to see if they are sold at Target or grocery stores.

These are specifically for children twelve and older. My son turned twelve in June. One patch is to be used at a time and on the clothing not the skin. This is different than the other two products. The Naturopatch could be used up to 24 hours and more than one can be applied to the person.

This has in big bold letters on the back the caution to keep out of reach of children and harmful if swallowed. This is to be kept away from pets and not used during pregnancy. I notice a sentence stating the following, " For occasional use only."

The patch measures roughly 3" x 2 1/2" and is sealed inside a white paper that lists the same cautions as the box. The paper is easy to tear open and remove the patch. The next step is to peel away the plastic lining of the patch, it is clearly a menthol scent. Placing the patch on the shirt is easy with the removal painless and no tearing of the patch. The smell is still noticeable and on a weekend I left it on my son by placing it from his sleep shirt to his day shirt. It seemed like a few more hours were working with the vapor.

This is noted to soothe and comfort with the listed ingredients menthol, camphor and eucalyptus. The box of patches needs to be stored at controlled room temperature and protect from excessive heat.

These are sold over the counter with the cold medicines. There is a lot number on the side of the box and each wrapped patch, but no sign of an expiration date. The box is opened by a tab that is pulled off, so it is possible that they placed it there, but it is tossed after opening so no way to know for sure.

My son does not pull these off and the scent is not as strong as the other patches, which my other son is glad since he would walk into the room and immediately know that smell and find it distracting for him to sleep.

My son has never taken one off nor has it fallen off the shirt. I put it on the chest area. The box does not state specifically where to put it. In the past I have placed patches on his back, but also one on the chest since more than one was allowed.

I am glad that this product is available and do not mind having to place it on his shirt since he did get rashes on his skin if he wore a patch more than one night (not the same patch). This does help him sleep, there is no waking up at night and no coughing in the bedroom.

The phone number is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-452-0051. If this product comes in contact with skin or eyes use water immediately and if necessary contact Doctor.

I've only ever used their hot drink mixes, but the patch sounds like something I'll have to try. Thanks for sharing, Bonnie!
