Imaginative and Original Masterpiece

In her debut novel, "The Time Traveler's Wife," Audrey Niffenegger has managed to create a unique work of fiction that transcends many traditional genres. Time travel is one of the most common science fiction tropes, and until I read this book I thought that I have already seen everything that can be done with it. However, by combining it with a drama and love story, and by making it a form of medical condition, Niffenegger has managed to breathe fresh life into this motif, and do it in such an innovative way that I came away both intrigued and amazed how naturally it contributed to the plotline. In fact, it was executed so flawlessly that at no point did I feel like there was something unnatural about it.

On one level the book can be thought of as a book about memories that keep and sustain a relationship between two lovers. Those of us who have been in such long term relationships can easily identify with the building of the relationship that happens gradually over a long period of time, and the special moments that we endow with meaning and use as the foundation of our shared identity.

Niffenegger is equally skilled at building of various characters as she is at the narrative flaw and the plotline. All of the protagonists in this novel have a lot of depth. They are not stand-ins for particular character trait or a personality type. All of them are as unique as the novel itself, and just like the novel they are all totally believable.

The prose too is very well done, and a pleasure to read. In my estimation there is not a single aspect of this novel that is in any sense flawed. Just like the events and the chronologies described, this book can be reread and appreciated many times. This is what one thinks of when one thinks of a book that should be considered a "classic."
