"lions and tigers and bears, oh my and a trojan horse and wiggly worm"
One would have thought I would have learned my lesson when I failed to hook my computer up to a surge protector and, one day, lightning struck outside our home and smoke poured from my computer. I took it for repair but all I accomplished was entertaining the repair people as they peered at all the exploded components. They had never seen one so devastated. So I bought a new computer. AND a really good surge protector!
I absolutely despise Norton as well as the different systems offered on computers for antivirus protection. All those dang popups all the time and messages are simply irritating. I elected for some other lame system, which was offered free from Avira. It had worked well in the past although I am sure for a free system it offered minimal protection. Then one day I'm doing what I always do, nothing Earth shattering, certainly not visiting strange sites, and BAM I get attacked. I get totally shut down and have notifications of trojans and worms and various other nasty guys patrolling my computer. I unplugged it immediately and took it to the geeks. They were nice enough to clean it up, no charge [amazingly] and said my quick action saved a lot of trouble.
Enter Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus+, my new best friend.
Installation and registration took about 10 minutes total and I consider it time well spent. It comes with a CD with easy to follow instructions, even for the computer illiterate like myself. It protects again viruses, spyware, spam, and security threats. There are several levels of installation but I chose the basic because I don't really do a lot on my computer anymore. However, if your computer is your life, I would suggest you go full throttle with the maximum security it offers.
System requirements: ~500MB free space ~CD ROM drive ~Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher ~Works with Windows 7, Vista, XP
They are set up on what the call "the cloud" system. It is an infrastructure that stops threats before they reach your PC 24/7, and uses less memory so it doesn't slow your computer down. The antivirus scanning is in real-time and reacts immediately to threats.
The basic, or essential, protection safeguards against attacks and prevents your computer from exchanging data without your own approval. The antivirus protection guards personal information and privacy as well as providing antispam filtering. It comes with free 24/7 technical support via live chat, phone, or email. It also offers site watch, which warns you about potentially unsafe websites in search results, before you make the mistake of clicking on one of them. Their security erase system over-writes your files seven times. They also have a micro vault which is a password protected folder where sensitive files are stores and can be locked remotely if your computer is lost or stolen. They also offer 10GB online backup for digital files.
Unfortunately the package I purchased was for a 1-PC user. I now wish I would have purchased the system that offered for 3-PC users so that all our computers could carry the same protection. Really, the cost difference is small so if you are in the market you might consider it if you are a multi-computer family. It comes with a renewable cost yearly which is done on-line. Periodic updates to the system are done automatically without all those bothersome alerts and popups.
I am competely satisfied with this system and have not noticed any loss of power in my system. Those trojans and worms can just go play elsewhere, my house is off limits.
