Fast, delicious, but a small gotcha if you are on a strict diet
Aug 19, 2013
I was tempted to subtract a star because this rice has a more than a nominal amount of fat from added oil. However, it's so delicious and perfect if you follow the directions and microwave it for a mere minute and a half that I gave it my highest mark.
The rice is fragrant as only a properly steamed brown rice can, and it is cooked to perfection. The plumb, flavorful grains make this one worth the trade-off for me because it would take forty-five minutes in a pressure cooker for me to achieve the same results. If you've ever steamed brown rice you will know that I mean.
What irks me, though, is this has - according to the box - either canola or sunflower oil (or both), which accounts for 30 of the 190 calories per serving (there are two servings per package.) That comes in at three grams of fat per serving, which is why I added a caveat in the title. However, sodium is a scant 15mg per serving.
For me the convenience and the perfect brown rice grains outweigh the minor nutritional factors. I do wish this rice was unadulterated with oil, but on the other hand I can live with it. It is truly a heart-healthy convenience food and that has to count for something.
