The Bottom Line: Excellent overall product. Doesn't have a smell. Holds throughout the entire day regardless of your activity level.
In order to understand how any styling product is used and whether or not it works for you, I think it is best to understand the person that is reviewing the product and their own usage.
I personally am a somewhat stylish 27 year old. I have relatively short hair but I style it in a messy spiked up manner. It is sort of a rockstar spiked look. I have dark brown hair but it is relatively soft hair so I have to make sure that the products that I am using make my soft hair a little easier to manage when it comes to my look.
The biggest issue that I have is finding products that are capable of standing the test of time. Since my hair is so soft it tends to fall really easy if I don't have the right products to hold it in place. The hardest part is that I don't want my hair to appear crunchy and greasy either.
I am also relatively cheap so I don't want to pay the high costs of the salon products. It is for this reason that I end up doing A LOT of experimenting when it comes to my hair cair products. I have used hundreds of products throughout the years and really have a great concept of what really works and what really doesn't.
So when you read these reviews make sure that you keep in mind that my hair is somewhat of a worst case scenario when it comes to styling but a best case scenario when it comes to conditioning and cleaning.
AXE MESSY STYLING PASTE My absolute favorite running line of hair styling products is the Axe line of hair products. I have found that they provide the right level of control with a good bit of hold at the same time.
One of the products in the Axe line that I have used quite a bit is the Messy Paste. While this isn't the current product that I am using from Axe it is the first that I ever used in order to create my current look.
The paste itself is basically a clay like material. You simply rub it into your fingers and then run it through your hair. It takes a little bit of water but too much will make it worthless. The product is a little bit more pliable than most of the other clays that I have tried in the past but definitely still a clay.
THE FEEL The paste itself molds pretty easily in your fingers. It is easy to work with than other products so you can make quick work with it through your hair to get the style that you want in a lot less time.
The nice thing about the product is that it doesn't have an oily feeling so it goes into your hair and washes out of your hands without any soap at all. In fact, it really washes out of your hair easy as well.
Once the product is in the hair it is somewhat light but it makes your hair look very natural. The thing that I like about it is that it makes my soft hair look a little more rough and rugged which is important for my look. I often purposely damage my hair in order to get it to stand up the way that I want it to. This product gives the hair a strong look and feel without having to purposely damage it in the process.
I also find that my hair feels much healthier after I am done using the product than before. This is just one of those few products that you use that doesn't seem to do more harm than good. That of course is always a good thing.
THE SMELL Most products these days have a lot of smell to them but this product doesn't really have one. You can smell it as you are applying it but you really can't smell it after that. The smell definitely disappears quickly which is a huge positive for me since I hate having smells coming from every inch of my body for each of the numerous products I use on a daily basis.
LONGEVITY/HOLD I have never had any issues with the longevity of this product. It holds up throughout my work day, throughout my sometimes intense runs/workouts, and it seems to even make it through light rain without any hairspray or touching up involved.
I definitely recommend staying away from hairspray when you are using this product. When you use hairspray the product just looks greasy. Because it seems to be somewhat of a clay base the hairspray seems to sit on the top of your hair rather than penetrating it giving it a really gross looking sheen. Besides, this product holds my spiked up hair without an issue so obviously it has more than enough hold to do the job.
My only recommendation is that you blow dry the concern areas of your hair to activate the hold and get the dry to take place. Once that happens the hold is set and you don't have to worry about it. This is really only necessary if you are styling your hair in a similar way to how I do it.
FINAL THOUGHTS This product is great. It works the way that I want it to for even my spiked up hair. It is also versatile enough that you can use it for a variety of different types of hair without any issues. I really don't think it matters what the purpose it is perfect for most any type of hair. It really just depends upon how creative you want to get with it.
