Fun and Beautifully Illustrated

This a very nicely written, interesting and beautifully illustrated children's book. The story takes on the classic Western genre and adds a magical twist to it. The main protagonist, Tornado Slim, is your typical lone cowboy character who walks into a town, rather reluctantly, saves the day and becomes the unwitting hero of the townsfolk. The story, however, departs from the typical western by the introduction of two elements that more properly belong into a fable - a talking coyote and the magical hat. It's an interesting fusion and the result is quite unusual.

The story is written in a very easy-going and personable style that tries to emulate a few of the typical word-choices that have come to be associated with Westerns. (The frequent use of the word "pardner" for instance.) The illustrations are beautiful and large, and one of my favorite features of this book. It is very nicely designed and printed hardcover book that is as fun to look at as it is to read. The book is probably most suitable for boys ages five and up, but younger boys also might find it interesting and amusing. I enjoyed reading it to my son and expect to read it often in the upcoming years. Strongly recommended.
