Time for a Change

Pros: Lightweight yet powerful

Cons: Price

After using the original Wilson Prostaff for the last fifteen years, I thought it was time to change to a new racket. You see, my Prostaff developed fine cracks in four places at the head of the racket. So, I went to my local pro tennis shop and demoed a number of rackets over the course of 5 weeks. I tried several rackets made by Prince, Yonex, Head and even Wilson. I eventually settled on the HyperHammer 5.3 Stretch. The Prince and Head rackets felt too light for me. They felt that I needed to swing at the ball faster in order to generate any speed. The Yonex rackets felt good but they too needed a faster swing than what I am used to. Then I tried the Wilson rackets. I tried the updated Prostaff version which felt like my old Prostaff. But after trying the new rackets that are lighter and stiffer, I wanted to have one. I felt that I didn't have to work as hard and had more energy after a set. Eventually after fine tuning the control and power I wanted in a racket, I settled on the 5.3 because it gave me the closest "feel" that I wanted in my game.

When I tried the Wilson rackets that were stiffer like a 2.3, I had a tendency to hit the ball long. With the 6.5, I needed to hit the ball with authority to get more pace. So far, after three months of play with this racket, I can say that I like this racket. At first, I thought the extra 1/2 inch length was going to take some adjusting but I was surprised that I didn't feel any difference. The immediate difference I felt vs. my old Prostaff was the increased head size. I purchased the mid-sized with the 95 sq. inch head. My Prostaff was an 85 sq. inch head, also mid-sized. As a solid 3.5-4.0 level player, with a fairly quick swing, you will like this racket as well.
