Ooooh, homemade truffles!

Pros: Good size and shape, easy to use mold, non-stick

The Bottom Line: Perfect candy mold for beginners or advanced candy makers.

Just the thought is making my arteries clog up! Wilton's Truffles Candy Mold allows you to make truffles and other filled candies at home at about 1/4 of the price it would cost to buy them pre made. And I swear, they aren't even that difficult!

About the mold itself
The mold is plastic with twelve truffle molds built in. The actual mold shape is pretty much identical to that of a Reese's Miniature Peanut Butter Cup. I think Wilton uses some special type of plastic, because I never have a problem with the candy sticking or with clean up. The plastic is fairly flexible, allowing you to contort the mold when popping out the candies.

Directions
Let me point out that Wilton does not include directions with their molds. They expect that you know how to make candy already. Melting instructions can be found on Wilton Candy Melt Bags. The directions I am providing here are based on my personal use and experience with candy making. I'm going to try not to go overboard with instructions, because this review is supposed to be about the mold, not an instruction book to candy making.

You can fill the mold entirely with melted chocolate, giving you a solid, crown shaped candy. This is not a bad thing, but I find that this mold is much better when you use it to make a filled candy. Generally speaking, you have to coat the bottom and sides of the molds, let the chocolate harden, go back and add your filling, let that cool, and then go back again and fill the remainder of the mold with chocolate and let it set completely. This mold is the perfect size for any type of filling. There is more than enough room for rice krispie blends, coconut, nuts, creme centers, peanut butter, and cherry cordials (to name a few that I have tried).

Once the chocolate has set (15-20 minutes in the freezer usually does it) you flip the mold and "pop" the candy out, much in the way you would do with an ice cube tray.

Any other details?
The best thing about Wilton molds is that they practically repel hardened chocolate, so candies are easy to remove from the mold. The only time I have ever had a problem with chocolate sticking was if it wasn't completely hardened yet.

Clean up is extremely easy - a little warm water and soap and a few swipes with a sponge and it will be perfectly clean. They are top-rack dishwasher safe, but there is really no need to put them in the dishwasher at all.

For me, this is not an everyday project because it is a lengthy process of melting, filling, cooling and I just don't have that kind of free time, but these are great to make for family functions and holidays.

Wilton also makes paper cupcake-wrapper style cups that are the perfect size for these candies and mini candy boxes so these make a really nice homemade gift if you're good at making them. The simple shape of the mold makes this perfect for beginners and advanced candy makers.
