Murders in West Virginia

One thing you can reliably say about books by David Baldacci is that they contain plots that race through the book like a runaway freight train. This book is no exception, and in addition introduces a new protagonist, John Puller, a military man who works to combat threats against the country, using an enormous array of different talents and abilities.

The plot begins when a mailman in a very rural West Virginia coal mining county comes upon a gruesome murder scene. Because one of the victims has ties to the military, Puller is sent to investigate. From the beginning, he has questions about his mission, because he is sent alone, rather than the usual method of a team of investigators.

Puller teams up with a local deputy sheriff, and together they look into a series of murders, which may or may not be connected. At times it appears that everyone in the small community has something to hide, and Puller discovers that his own life is in grave danger.

The plot goes roaring on and Puller and his deputy colleague uncover a plot that almost boggles the imagination. It is up to them to put an end to it, but time is growing very short. The last several chapters must be read at one sitting, for I don't believe the reader can put the book down at that point, until it ends.

It's another great read from Baldacci, and I'm happy to see that the author has already published another book featuring Puller. I know I'm going to read that one also!
