Liu Xiaobo is a Chinese intellectual and activist who was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize against the protest of the Chinese Government, which has warned that the awarding of this prize to Liu will hurt relations between the Norwegians and the Chinese. The Chinese Government considers Liu a criminal. and he is currently serving an eleven year prison sentence, begun in December 2009, for inciting subversion of state power. He is a literary critic who criticizes the authoritarian rule of the Chinese Communist Party. He is the first mainland Chinese to ever win a Nobel prize. Liu is one of three Nobel Peace Prize Laurreates honored while imprisoned. He joins Aung San Sui Kyi of Burma and Carl von Ossietzky, a German Pacifist jailed by the Nazis.
