Chocolate Nut Pie (similar to Kentucky Derby Pie)

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 lb butter, melted and cooled slightly
1/2 cup broken pecans
1/2 cup broken walnuts
1 6 oz package semi-sweet chocolate bits
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 frozen 9" pie crust

Combine all ingredients and pour into frozen pie shell. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until set.

About 20 years ago my wife and I were travelling through the State of Kentucky on a cold and rainy day. Around mid-afternoon we decided to stop for some chow at what appeared to be a chain restaurant on the interstate. For the life of me I cannot remember the name. In any event, we both had a sandwich and the waitress succeeded in talking both of us into trying the house specialty which was Kentucky Derby Pie. Neither one of us had ever heard of it but it looked so yummy in the revolving display case we simply could not resist. As I recall, it was served warm with splash of whipped cream on top. It was positively heavenly! The best way I can describe Kentucky Derby Pie would be pecan pie with chocolate chips. This has got to be one of tastiest treats I have ever had! But I must warn you it is very, very rich so for most people a small slice will suffice.
When we returned home a few days later we were still raving about Kentucky Derby Pie. My wife decided to write to the restaurant and see ask how we might obtain the recipe. Lo and behold about a week later my wife received a hand-written copy of the receipe from one of the employees. Talk about southern hospitality! Now if you go online you will see lots of different recipes for Kentucky Derby a/k/a Derby pie. Some receipes call for butterscotch, different kinds of nuts and even Kentucky bourbon! But as you can see this particular version of Kentucky Derby Pie is really quite easy to make and the ingredients relatively inexpensive. So if you are looking for something a bit out of the ordinary why not give this recipe a try. I guarantee you that you won't regret it.
