Recipe for marinaded tempeh

Like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but tempeh is a whole soybean product with a higher content of protein, dietary fiber, and vitamins. Its cakelike, and much denser then tofu, which makes it a good meat substitute.

This recipe for marinated tempeh is really easy and makes tempeh actually taste good. I’m the type of vegetarian who is NOT into fake meat products and do not eat my fair share of soy either. I’m trying to incorporate more protein in my diet as well as cook foods that my chicken-loving boyfriend will enjoy as well.

 This recipe is adopted from 101cookbooks.com, a fabulous site that has the most gorgeous recipes ever.

This version is more mild and is a quick marinade, so that the flavor doesn’t get too overwhelming.

You wll need:

1 package of tempeh, I think it is about 8 ounces

4 tablespoons soy sauce4tablespoons maple syrup

1 teaspoon balsamic viniger

1 teaspoon garlic chili sauce (saracha)

 
Make the marinade by combining all ingredients in a bowl. Wisk until incorporated. Set aside.

Cut tempeh into 4 squares, and then half those squares lengthwise, to make them thinner.

Place the pieces of tempeh flat in a large baking dish. Pour marinade over, and let it sit for 30 min- 1 hour.

To cook, you can either grill it or pan fry with a little bit of olive oil. Brush each side with the marinade on the bottom and flip it halfway through cooking time. When the tempeh is golden brown and hot throughout, its done.

You can put this tempeh on a sandwich, with veggies over rice, or on mashed potatoes.

Perfect for the first time tempeh eater. Next I need to adapt it to put in stir fry. The marinade would also be good with tofu.
