I love Cracker Barrel.  My wife and I have breakfast with a friend every once in awhile and we always seem to wind up at the same place....Cracker Barrel.   Aside from the terrific food at Cracker Barrel we really enjoy the atmosphere.  We never feel rushed and we sometimes wile away a couple of hours having breakfast and catching up with our friend while also enjoying the bottomless cup of coffee.  I love the pancakes (served with real maple syrup) and the sugar cured ham (the country ham on the menu is a bit too salty for my taste....the waitress does warn you!).  My wife and our friend always seem to order what is called  "The Old Timers Breakfast" which consists of  the following:

Two Eggs* cooked to order with Grits, Sawmill Gravy, Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits, real Butter and the best Preserves, Jam n' Apple Butter (on request) we could find.
~plus~
Fried Apples or Hashbrown Casserole
~and~
Choice of Smoked Sausage Patties, Turkey Sausage Patties or Thick-Sliced Bacon

For those so inclined there are also traditional Southern favorites likes grits and gravy.  I believe I will pass on that one!    During the colder months of the year the fireplace is always going creating an exceptionally warm and friendly environment.  I have found that breakfast can be a bit pricey compared to local restaurants but the quality of the food and the atmosphere more than compensate for it.  I have only had dinner at Cracker Barrel on a couple of occasions and I find that price wise the home-cooked dinners are really the better value.

Now one cannot do a review of Cracker Barrel without making mention of the fabulous gift shop at each location.  Here you will find all sorts of old fashioned products.   It is the only place I know of that carries many of the toys I played with as a child (many long years ago) like Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs.  Or how about a harmonica?  Such simple pleasures!  You can also purchase some of those candy bars you devoured as a child and rarely see anymore like Sky Bars Bit-O-Honey and Mallo Cups.  The inventory changes frequently so we find that each visit to the gift shop is a real shopping adventure. All in all we find Cracker Barrel to be a most enjoyable experience each and every time we go.  Very highly recommended!

I drove past a restaurant called Cracker Barrel in Albuquerque the other day. I wonder if it's part of a chain, do you know? My sister said it's like IHOP meets country store were all the ranchers from all over New Mexico would come on Sundays to grab a hearty breakfast.
