When in NYC a couple of weeks ago, my good friend suggested we meet for drinks and dinner. She always picks the best restaurants - places with great ambiance, tasty ethnic fare and fun drinks. This time she recommended Ideya in Soho. It was once again a perfect choice!
Ideya is a Latin bistro decorated in colorful Caribbean and Aftrican influenced artwork. A fairly small space, Ideya has a cozy, buzzing vibe when packed with a dinner crowd. The menu, crafted by Chef Isaac Reyes is a flavorful combination on Spanish, African and Carribean Latin cuisines.
I start with the Camarones (large Shrimp with salad) which was light and tasty. The waiter also brought fried plantains with salsa to the table and they were fantastic! The best I've ever tasted. For dinner we sampled the Dorado Chino Latino (ginger marinated pan roasted mahi mahi, saffron fried rice, black bean-palmito salsa) and Jerk Pork Chop (jerk marinated pork chop, sauteed kale with peanuts, ginger-banana chutney). Both were fresh, moist and delicious. Paired with pina mojo, followed by a passionfruit mojito, I was a stuffed and happy camper.
Though the dinner was wonderful, I can see this being a great place to stop by just for a drink. Their cocktail menu consists of 7 different variations of mojitos, multiple margarita options and other interesting concoctions like the Caipirosca (vodka, lime juice and sugar). Their drink menu is a refreshing change from the beer and wine menus at other restaurants (though they also have a small selection of wine). This would be a great spot for a date or just a girls night out.
The food prices are reasonable (especially for such a trendy neighborhood), but beware the lure of too many cocktails. They are so light and taste so good that they go down quick and add up on the bill fast! Overall, a great laid-back option in Soho!

I love cocktails. It's great to know where to find good ones with such exotic cuisines to go with!
