Best Pizza in Los Angeles

Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich collaborated to open this Pizzeria in Hollywood and the succeeded in taking pizza to a new level. Whereas many celebrity owned restaurants feel formulaic and abandoned by their star chefs, this relatively inexpensive and causal spot next door to the more expensive Osteria Mozza, feels as though the owners are taking an active interest in the food and vibe. My impression may have been colored by the fact that Mario (complete with orange clogs) was supervising the kitchen on one visit and Silverton was behind the counter on both visits.

And the food…? The fennel sausage, panna, red onion & scallions pizza is simply the best pizza I have ever tasted. It helps Silverton (who owned and operated the La Brea Bakery) has created an unbelievable crust. In addition, the cheese, sauce and toppings are delicious in their own right and when combined, create a truly decadent dish. I also tried the Egg, guanciale, radicchio, escarole & bagna cauda, which was great although messy with the egg yolk spilling over the pie when sliced, and the Funghi misti, fontina, taleggio & thyme. I can also recommend the Fried squash blossoms with ricotta the Insalata mista, both delicious.

I have only eaten here for lunch and so was not drinking, but the wine list, which contains 50 Italian wines at $50 per bottle and under, makes me want to return for dinner.

The only downside is that it is too far from where I live.

Update: made another visit and had a great Ipswich Clam pizza along with the Fennel Sausage pizza. Silverton was again manning the restaurant. Lived up to my previous experience and still the best pizza I have ever had.

I went here last Thursday and coincidentally ordered the fennel sausage pizza, which was fantastic!   The vanilla cotta dessert and espresso were also great meal enders.  Did you have trouble getting reservations? I had to book this place 3 weeks in advance, but it was worth it when my friend caught a celebrity sighting of Kate Walsch a (by the looks of it, underfed) actress from Grey's Anatomy.

Yeah...reservations are really hard to get. But if you go for lunch, you can show up 10 min before they open and walk right in. I have been three times for lunch, without a reservation. That dessert sounds really good

Their pizzas sound delicious! My mom works not too far away so maybe I could check it out. Thanks for sharing!
