Brown Bread...ice cream?

Although I'm not an ice cream fanatic OR vegan, I went to Scoops as per the recommendation of a vegan friend. It is not strictly a vegan ice cream store... they do have many flavors that are dairy-free.

The storefront is small and pretty unsuspecting, but is tucked in a cute little area of stores by Los Angeles City College - nearby there is a bike shop, smoke shop, cafe, and one of my favorite restaurants, Pure Luck. They usually have local artists set up work in the sitting area of Scoops, and that's pretty cool. Like a mini-gallery!

Obviously, the ice cream flavors are the best part of any visit to Scoops. They blend different flavor palettes to get non-traditional flavors that are NEVER gross and never too sickeningly sweet. Seriously, I've tried so many flavors (oh, did I mention you can get a spoonful of any flavor to try, for free?   !!!) and expect some to be weird and gross but they never are:

Spiced Beet - Ok, this sounds so disgusting, right? It was awesome! It was beet-colored but not really beet-flavored. It mostly tasted like a slightly-vanilla flavor with some spices - maybe cinnamon and nutmeg. Not my favorite, but surprisingly good!
Brown Bread - Definitely one of my favorites. Tastes like a mild plain/vanilla flavor with Grape Nuts topping the batch. AMAZING.
Popcorn - My NUMBER ONE favorite. To me it is most similar to a Butter Pecan- it is sweet but with a bit of a salty aftertaste to it. Mmm, sweet&salty comno rules! It's INCREDIBLE.

And, some more flavors that aren't too weird but still delicious:

Vegan Banana Oreo

Earl Grey Chocolate
Mascarpone Oreo
Lavender Honey
Strawberry Lychee
Banana Coconut

If you try Scoops make sure you go earlier in the day, and preferably on a weekday. As the day goes on the flavors tend to sell out (when I go 20 mins before closing they can be WIPED out.) Also, they tend to keep weird hours- normally they stick to the hours listed but there have been times I've tried to go at like, 3:30 PM on a Sunday and they were closed. Hm.

Scoops sells their ice cream by the scoop, so one scoop is $2.75 and you can upgrade to two scoops or three... However, one scoop means they put 2 HEAPING scoops in - it's a great deal AND you can mix flavors! If you want my advice, I'd say to go for the $6 pint - you can also mix 2 flavors in this size and they PACK. IT. with ice cream. Probably the most bang for your buck.

....Unless you're like me and eat a pint in one sitting with your ice cream-obsessed boyfriend. :) We're addicted!!

I definitely dig restaurants with cool artwork.  And all those flavors sounds awesome.  I'm intrigued!  If you're looking for more unusual flavored frozen treats, word on Lunch is that Paciugo Gelato has flavors like chocolate jalapeno and sea salt caramel ;)

this is true. Pagiugo Gelato is quite a bit closer to me than Scoops (although I've been meaning to make it out to give Scoops a try as well) and it is pretty awesome. they make their gelato in-house and I have to say...the sea salt caramel is every bit as good as everyone says!
