Places that provide inexpensive and authentic Indian food
So let's check through the month so far:
New information about 'Avatar' - check (looks great)
Google Voice beta release - check (works great)
Tantra - check, check check (taste great!)
I was brought here by my parents - both of which love Indian food - and had been telling me for months how exceptional it is. After years of under-delivering on superlatives, this is a find worthy of repeating - Tantra is likely the best Indian restaurant in California.
Not only does it have a great ambiance, excellent service and diverse drink selection, it's also - major big breath here - not expensive at all. Holy hell, how did that happen? You're looking at $9-12 for an entree, so using the James Beswick logic of multiple 2.5x for a whole meal, it's realistically $30/head for two courses with wine or beer.
Particular appetizer delights include:
The introductory poppadoms - the chutneys are just amazing. All of them, but I especially love the green one.
Lemon Scallops - get this with some Naan bread since there's enough in one appetizer for four people.
The tasting platter - an easy way to get a sense of the appetizers.
Then we hit the entrees:
Specials - I recommend ordering at least one of these since I've not been disappointed.
Chicken Tikka Masala - my good Indian friend Ra told me it's the best in the LA and I think he's probably right on this.
Lamb chops - this is quite spicy but the meat is cooked to perfection.
Anyway, I'm in love. If I lived closely and earned a decent income I would be here all the time. Spectacular in every respect. One of the only things I miss about England is the Indian food - and this restaurant ranks with the very best I've had there. Long may it continue!
