A taste of Spain in Southern California.

I'm a total food junkie, so when I first went to Spain, I was basically consuming everything in sight. But it wasn't just because I was hungry all the time... It was because the food was so good! So when I returned to the States, I searched desperately for a good Spanish restaurant near me. That's when I found Viva Madrid.

Viva Madrid is probably the closest you could get to somewhat-authentic Spanish cuisine. In other words, it's not terribly authentic, but it does the job.

The restaurant is located in a narrow alley off Yale Avenue in downtown Claremont. It's hard to find at first, but once you start walking down the hallway to which its front door opens, you'll know you're in the right place. Step inside, and boom! You're literally in some random restaurant in the middle of Seville.

All of their tapas are quite good, in my opinion, and I particularly enjoy their "pan con tomate," toasted bread with tomatoes and olive oil. It has just the right amount of tomato and olive oil to serve as a crisp, refreshing appetizer. Also, this is one of the few places I've found in the area to serve white-wine sangria, which is a far cry from the traditional Spanish red-wine sangrias.

The restaurant can get packed, and they're not consistent with accepting reservations. Your best bet is to arrive early, or set yourself up mentally for a long wait. However, it's worth the energy; their tapas are cheap and service is great. If you've never tried Spanish cuisine, I highly recommend Viva Madrid as a place to start.
