Inexpensive and Delicious...a Winning Combination

Zankou Chicken is a Los Angeles treasure. If you are a fan of rotisserie or roasted chicken I would highly recommend it. I have introduced this place to a number of people and no one has been disappointed.

Zankou offers Armenian food consisting of Kebabs, Shwarma, Falafel, Hummus, Pita, Rice, Vegetables and of course, their signature Chicken. I get the chicken every time. The chicken has been slow roasted on a rotisserie and the meat falls off the bone. The skin is crisp and the meat moist. It comes with a delicious garlic sauce that while strong, is not overpowering. The chicken also comes with their homemade hummus, chopped tomatoes, onions and pita bread.  Some dark meat chicken with pita hummus onion and garlic sauce is an incredible lunch or dinner.

For a quarter chicken with the above sides, the cost is $5.98 . A half chicken costs $8.49. If many people are eating, it makes sense to buy whole chickens and a la carte sides which can keep the cost to $4.00 or so per person for a decent amount of food. At these prices, I cannot help but agree with Zagat which has rated Zankou as one of the "best buys" in Los Angeles for several years.

The restaurants themselves are pretty bare bones and we usually pick up the food to go. Unfortunately, they only have a handful of restaurants and they are limited to the Los Angeles area. Next time you are looking for an inexpensive and delicious meal, try Zankou.

I have to find this place...I hope it's in San Francisco.

I stand corrected. I thought that the food was Armenian as well, but I noticed that they had originally opened in Beirut. I will amend my review. Thanks Peccatorimpius

Dan, great review! I love Zankou too, but I believe they serve up Armenian food, not Lebanese food. During the Armenian genocide, there was a large dispersion of Armenians to Lebanon.
