2007 CD release

The premise was simple. Bruce Springsteen invites a dozen or so New York City musicians--packing banjos, fiddles, accordions and the like--to his New Jersey farmhouse for a three-day hootenanny, and tape is rolling. The results are sublime, his 21st … see full wiki

Recently,  when I arrived home from work  there was an unexpected surprise awaiting me at my doorstep.  A buddy of mine had sent me a copy of Bruce Springsteen's 2006 CD "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions".   My friend had raved about this disc in a phone conversation.  And as usual he was right on the money.  "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" just might be the best album Bruce Springsteen has ever recorded.  It really is that good.

I was quite surprised to learn that the only tune on this disc that Pete Seeger had a hand in writing was the title tune "We Shall Overcome".  Oddly enough I thought that it was probably the weakest track on the disc.  Ol' Bruce just does not have the pipes to pull it off.  But my criticism of this disc starts and ends right there.  For the other dozen tunes are absolutely spectacular!   These are all tunes that the legendary Pete Seeger had recorded during his career.  Now if you are like me you will probably recognize some of these songs and be hearing others for the very first time.  You will enjoy inspired performances of traditional favorites like "John Henry", "Erie Canal" and "Mary Don't You Weep".  I particularly enjoyed "Eyes on the Prize" with it's traditional Dixieland jazz sound and the rollicking "Pay Me My Money Down" with it's marvelous Cajun flavor.  You are also sure to enjoy "Shenandoah" and "Old Dan Tucker" to mention a couple of more.  And kudos to the 13 outstanding musicians who lent their considerable talents to this very special project.

"We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" comes with a neat 16 page booklet and the disc is a Dual Disc featuring a 30 minute video documenting the making of this CD.  If you had asked me about Bruce Springsteen in years gone by I might have told you that he was probably a bit overrated.  But after hearing "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" I have defintely gained a new appreciation for this man.  It sure beats the pablum that Rod Stewart has been spewing out in recent years.  Here's to many more successful ventures by The Boss in the future!    Highly recommended
