I love Elliot Smith. I have listened to his albums over and over again, back to back, on many occasions. And no, it wasn't during a harsh breakup or anything like that. I just adore his songs, and even though the lyrics are often glum, cynical and dark, they're masked behind the most beautiful musical arrangements.
Roman Candle is all acoustic guitar, and is the best cloudy day album ever because you really just want to shroud yourself in these songs--especially the title track. I also love No Name #4. The lyrics of this song have such strong imagery, you can almost smell the old cigarettes and pot. Condor Ave. is another song like that. Honestly, the album in its entirety is great.
Here are my other favorite songs from his other albums:

Elliot Smith:
Christian Brothers
Coming Up Roses
Alphabet Town
The Biggest Lie

Either/Or:
Between the Bars
Alameda
Angeles
2:45 am
Ballad of Big Nothing

X/O:
Pitselah (possibly my favorite ES song overall)
Bottle Up and Explode
Waltz #2
Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands

Figure 8:
L.A.
Stupidity Tries
Wouldn't Mama be Proud
I Better Be Quiet Now

From a Basement on the Hill:
Pretty (Ugly Before)
Twilight
Strung Out Again

I am so glad that I got to see him at the Fillmore. He seemed a little disoriented, forgetting lyrics to some of his songs. But I hope that the love and adoration felt in the concert hall that night somehow penetrated through whatever drugged haze he may or may not have been in. A year later, and he was dead. Very sad. But his music is still very much alive. I'm listening to him right now. I absolutely love Elliot Smith, may he RIP.

I have a couple Elliott Smith CD's and his songs are beautiful. I usually listen to them when I'm in a pensive mood, because they are pretty dark and sad, but hopeful too. He addresses so many issues that other artists are afraid to touch. Thanks for your review and love the title:)
