2002 2 disc audio CD release

Arguably the finest and most expansive Kinks collection on the market! The first disc of this double-disc begins with their third single and first No. 1, the insistent 'You Really Got Me', then races through the glory years with the absurdly infectious … see full wiki

They arrived in America in 1964 riding the first wave of the British Invasion. Over the next two decades The Kinks would prove to be one of the most important and influential rock and roll bands in the world attracting a loyal and dedicated following while selling millions of singles and LP's.  For years I have been searching for a comprehensive collection of rock and roll's most important groups.  In 2002, Sanctuary records released the 2 disc set "Kinks: The Ultimate Collection".  For the very first time, this Kinks fan found virtually all of the Kinks hit records I was looking for in one fantastic collection.

"The Ultimate Collection" offers each and every one of their long string of great singles on Reprise between 1964 and 1971. Enjoy once again their biggest and most memorable hits including their debut release "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All Of The Night", "Tired of Waiting For You" as well as their huge 1970 hit "Lola".  I thought that some of the groups finest work took place during years 1966-1967 when they released terrific tunes like "Sunny Afternoon", "Dead End Street" and most expecially "A Well Respected Man" which remains one of my personal favorites  All of these tunes are included here.   "The Ultimate Collection" also allows you to sample some of bands big British hits including "Autumn Almanac" and "Waterloo Sunset".

In 1971 the Kinks left Reprise and signed a deal with RCA records. Over the next several years they recorded a number of critically acclaimed albums including "Muswell Hillbillies", "Schoolboys In Disgrace" and "Celluloid Heroes".   Oddly enough none of the singles from these albums would ever even make it to the Top 100 Singles chart.  You can sample the title track of "Celluloid Heroes" here in this collection.  Fast forward now to 1977. The Kinks had not had a hit record in more than 6 years.  The band signed a new deal with Arista records.  They were still making great music.  Over the next several years they would release a series of terrific and commercially successful albums including "Sleepwalker", "Misfits" and "Low Budget".  Suddenly, Kinks music was not only being heard on album-oriented FM stations but for the first time in a long time on Top 40 AM radio as well.   You can sample virtually all of these Arista hit singles in "The Ultimate Collection" including the aforementioned "Sleepwalker", "A Rock and Roll Fantasy",  "Do It Again" and their huge 1981 Top Ten hit "Come Dancing".

If you are looking for the most comprehensive collection of  The Kinks then look no further.  "Kinks:  The Ultimate Collection" is definitely the one you want.  This collection was a long time coming but definitely worth the wait.   Highly recommended!

Great review. I listened to the Kinks growing up but haven't heard much of their music in awhile. Lola is an amazing song that always will cause me to turn up the volume when it comes on. I should buy this collection to rediscover their other songs. Thanks
