As the Whuffaoke (whuffaoke.com) crew has been traveling across the U.S., performing in cities night after night, I think I have some room to give advice on Karaoke performances. Granted, I don't always rock out to every song I sing, but when I grab the mic for "My Heart Will Go On," you can bet that you're in for a treat.

Here are the ways to give a memorable Karaoke performance of "My Heart Will Go On"
  1. Know when to be soft and when to belt it out...and make sure you move the mic away from your mouth a little when belting, just in case. Don't want to blow any ear drums.
  2. Do lots of reaching out to the audience...you know, like Rose did to Jack. Make them feel like they are part of the performance.
  3. If you have the chance, use a cordless mic and move around the crowd. Imagine you're on a ship big enough to be the Titanic. Engage with the audience...cuddle up to them, have them stand behind you for the famous "Jack and Rose at the front of the ship" scene...arms out, just don't move the mic from your mouth.
  4. When belting the "You're.....HERE...." part at the end, stand up on something, a table, chair, bar, speaker...whatever is available. You need to be "the King (or Queen) of the world!"
  5. As you finish, make sure you know the final quote between Jack and Rose from Titanic. This isn't in the Karaoke lyrics, so let me help you out:
Jack :Promise me now Rose and never let go of that promise.

Rose: I promise.

Jack: Never let go...

Rose: I'll never let go jack, I'll never let go.
I promise.

Follow all of this, and your heart (as well as the memory of your performance) will ALWAYS go on!

And if you can sing it from the top of an RV in the middle of Manhattan, even better!

Based on how much fun I had simply reading that, I can't really fathom what a live experience would be like!! = ) We'll have to get to it on your next LA trip, for sure.

Wiki

"My Heart Will Go On" is the theme song of the 1997 blockbuster film Titanic. With music by James Horner, lyrics by Will Jennings, and production by Walter Afanasieff, it was recorded by Céline Dion. Originally released in 1997 on Dion's album Let's Talk About Love, it went to number 1 all over the world, including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. My Heart Will Go On was released in Australia and Germany on December 8, 1997, and in the rest of the world in January and February of 1998. It became one of the best-selling singles of all time, and was the world's best selling single of 1998.

Horner had originally composed the song as an instrumental motif that is used in several scenes during Titanic. He then wanted to make a full vocal song out of it, for use in the end credits of the film. Director James Cameron did not want such a song, but Horner went ahead anyway and got Jennings to write the lyrics. Dion was Horner's first choice to sing it, but when she heard the song, she did not want to record it. It was her manager and husband, René Angélil, who convinced her to record a demo version, which was something she hadn't done for many years. Horner waited until Cameron was in an appropriate mood before presenting him with the song. After playing it several times, Cameron declared his approval, although worried that he might be criticised for "going commercial at the end of the movie."

The song was ...
