Certainly one of the most important R&B groups of the 1950's.

Whether you are already a huge fan of this music or someone just exploring the genre  "The Five Keys:  Golden Classics" is a "must have" disc.  The Five Keys hailed from Newport News, Va. Lead singer Rudy West is considered by many to be the finest lead singer of the era.  He would certainly rank with the likes of WIllie Winfield of the Harptones and Eugene Mumford of the Larks.  Anyway, the Five Keys signed with Aladdin Records in 1951 and achieved modest success.  Their biggest hit with Aladdin was "The Glory of Love."  For the most part though, the Aladdin recordings were gutsy R&B numbers.  Many hard core R&B buffs probably prefer that sound to what emerged when Capitol Records signed the group in 1954.  Capitol saw the groups great potential with pop music audiences of the day.  The result was a series of fabulous recordings, replete with lush arrangements and highlighting the vocal prowess of Rudy West.  Tunes such as "Wisdom of A Fool", "Let There Be You" and "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" appeared on both the pop and R&B charts.  I am also partial to a number of other cuts on this CD, including "The Verdict", "Who Do You Know In Heaven" "C'est La Vie" and in particular the final cut "One Great Love".  The Five Keys never achieved the national success Capitol had hoped for. But that certainly does not diminish the superb body of work they left for all to enjoy.  An extremely enjoyable disc!   Highly recommended!
