Pharcyde's original members are: Imani, SlimKid3, Fatlip and Bootie Brown. Imani, SlimKid3 and Bootie Brown were all high school friends in South Central Los Angeles that started as dancers and choreographers under the name "Two for Two". They met Fatlip and J Swift at an after school music program called South Central Unit. Reggie Andrews, the teacher for the program, taught the boys about the music industry and would later oversee their first recording of their demo, which included "Yo Mama" in 1991. They were first featured on the Brand New Heavies track, "Soulflower". After an artist showcase, where they performed "Yo Mama", Delicious Vinyl signed them to their label.
The first album, released November 1992 and produced mostly by J Swift, is Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. The first single off of Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde was "Yo Mama." "Passin' Me By", one of the most popular songs by Pharcyde which is often linked to the "golden era of hip-hop", only peaked on Billboard's Hot 100 at #52. J Swift produced the entire Bizarre Ride album except for "Otha Fish" because he left the group before production was finished.
In 1995, the group released Labcabincalifornia which was produced by J. Dilla (aka Jay Dee) and Diamond D. "Runnin'", another one of the group's popular songs amongst the hip hop community, only hit #55 on Billboard' s Hot 100. Fatlip was forced to leave the group after Labcabincalifornia due to a coke problem.
In 2000, the three remaining members released the EP Chapter One: Testing the Waters which was soon followed by their full studio album, Plain Rap. After Plain Rap, SlimKid3 (aka Tre Hardson) left the group to pursue a solo career. He released his solo debut, Liberation, in 2002.
In 2004, there were only two original members and they released Humboldt Beginnings, introducing two new members Schmooche Cat and Spaceboy Boogie X (who also produced the album) and their new indie record label, Chapter One Entertainment.
In 2005, a complilation was released, Sold My Soul: Remix and Rarity Collection. Also, in 2005, Fatlip released his solo debut The Loneliest Punk. In 2006, Tre Hardson released his second album, SlimKid3's Cafe.
Pharcyde and Bay Area's Souls Of Mischief came together to form Mighty Python and released Mighty, Mighty Python. This was the only album for the group who say that they continue to do collabortations.
They just finished touring Australia for the Good Vibes Festival in February 2009.
