Probably the Most Underated Film Score of All Time!

I will admit it, I love the likes of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer and James Horner, but Steve Jablonskys score of Transformers is my favorite film score to date!  I like it better than Star Trek and I like it better than Star Wars.  When you listen to this score, you know you're watching an epic film.  And if you're not, well then you should be.  Never have I heard something so original and so powerful and I own a lot of film scores.

I have to admit, when I found out that this score was produced by Hans Zimmer at his studio, I wasn't the least bit surprised.  The Transformers score has everything that makes an epic film like most of the movies that Hans Zimmer composes, what they are.  It has ups, it has downs and it has soul.  Now having said that Hans Zimmer along with James Horner tends to get a touch repetitive at times which is what completely separates Jablonskys score from theirs.

When you think of Hans Zimmers scores you think of a lot of heavy horn use along with string instruments and chorus.   What Jablonsky does is the opposite; he uses strings very heavily accompanied by horns and occasionally the chorus for the decepticon tracks.  During the Scorponok track, it's heavy on strings and very heavy on the drums.  In the background of that track though are the horns.

Jablonsky also does an amazing job mixing in his hero themes with the enemy themes.  For about the first half of the Scorponok track the music is very alert and dangerous, but as the soldiers are about to get back up in that scene of the film, the hero stringed themes start up.  This is also the theme used in the middle of the current trailer for Revenge of the Fallen.  The must listen to track of this score though is "Arrival to Earth" when the rest of the autobots are arriving on the planet.  This theme is so epic and so fun to listen to.  It's string heavy and has a beautiful chorus that halfway through gets very drum heavy.  It definitely makes you feel like something big is happening.

I honestly can't wait to see what he does with the next film.  Apparently, Jablonsky is working along side Linkin Park this time scoring the soundtrack together since Linkin Parks "What I've Done" was the song for the Transformers film.  If you love film music, this score will change your outlook on a lot of music you have heard.  5/5!

although I have very mixed feelings about the film, I have to admit that the soundtrack was quite good. Nice write up to prep for the new Transformers movie!

Hey Julian - I read your review earlier at work today, and then just now at home I actually listened to the album online on imeem. Wow! I loved it! I'm not too big on soundtracks and film scores, but this review made me look into checking a few out like Transformers. Thanks!
