First, Paul became Muad Dib, sparked the Jihad and became Emperor to free mankind (DUNE). But he was afraid to take the "final step" and his son, Leto II "seemed to" - he allowed Sand Trout to crawl up his arm and do "something" to him so he could do "something" they called the "Golden Path" (Children of Dune)! It's been some time and the movie-watching audience has no real idea what the "Golden Path" is! It's almost like "the Lord of the Rings" movie stopped just as Frodo and Sam captured Gollum; do they kill him - do they follow him - do they [whatever]?
