Hawaii Five-0

4 Ratings: 2.5
Remake of classic crime-drama series that debuted on CBS on September 20, 2010

The idea to bring Hawaii Five-O back to television had been in the works well before the 2010 version was announced. The first attempt was a one-hour pilot for a new series that was made in 1996 but never aired, although a few clips were found years … see full wiki

Off To An Explosive Start!

  • Sep 21, 2010
I watched the first episode yesterday and other than the setting and the opening theme music this show is nothing like the original.  Steve McGarrett is a dark character.  As it opens he is a Navy Seal (I think) on a combat mission of sorts.  He is talking on his cell phone to some madman who has his father at gunpoint, who tells him that he must give him his brother.  The convoy is attacked and in the mayhem that follows, the madman's brother takes a shot a McGarrett who then shoots him dead.  The madman on the other end of the cellphone realizing that his brother is dead tells McGarrett, "Now your father is dead too" and then shoots McGarrett's father.  All of a sudden we see the familiar wave and hear the music and see similar Hawaiian scenes from the original opening of the 70's series.

McGarrett returns in his Naval Officer uniform to Pearl Harbor where he is met by the Governer of Hawaii.  She wants him to head a special task force to reel in the baddie that killed his father.  McGarrett says no thank you and then heads to his home, which is now a crime scene with yellow tape that McGarrett ignores.

McGarrett seems to be smarter than the cops and he finds a fingerprint at the desk where his father was killed (and the cops missed this?) and a boot print that nobody else seemed to notice.  He goes into the garage and attempts to take his tool box when he is ambushed by a cop, recently transferred from New Jersey (Daniel aka Dano).  They draw guns on each other (how come a Navy Officer has a gun?) and after an exchange of words and a cat and mouse game where they pull out their identification, McGarrett calls the Governer and accepts her offer on the spot.  All of a sudden Daniel is working for McGarrett??

The show progresses with McGarrett and Daniel at each other's throats and McGarrett enlists the aid of a childhood friend who was assigned to a type of desk duty because he was suspected of corruption and a hot surfer chick, who can kick butt and is a week away from graduating the police academy.

I won't give away the rest of the plot but McGarrett operates like a darker version of Dirty Harry, going where he wants without any type of warrent and shooting or hitting bad guys at will.   Cops are shot and so are bad guys and no kind of police report seems to be needed???

McGarrett also seems to be a "Jason Statham type" martial artist and has fight scenes right out of the Transporter series.  The plot seems to be faced paced and difficult to follow and McGarrett seems to be a real uncontrolled dark character with a grudge against the world.

This is definately not the 70's version of the series but it seems a lot different than anything else on network television so I will watch it a few more times before I pass judgement.  I still give this episode four stars for the entertainment.

I stuck with the show for about 6 episodes before I gave it the Heave-Ho from my Ti-vo.

That is three episodes longer than me. I don't think this show can survive.

Wanted to stay up to take a look at the premiere episode but I could not stay awake (I am a very early riser). Your description of McGarrett as a "dark" charactor really does not surprise me. Seems like everything on TV these days is depressing. Rather than worry about staying up late and losing sleep to watch this new version I think I might just buy a couple of seasons of the old series on DVD. I suspect that in the long run they will be much more entertaining.

You probably can find the episode online at Hulu.

Great review; I used to watch the original years ago and loved McGarrett's character and the beautiful scenery didn't hurt either! I'll have to give this show a look see!

Like I said in my review, the opening credits and some of the names of the characters are the only things that resemble the original.
