For a total newbie who wanted to catch up on the series, how would you sum things up without giving away too much of the plot?

"Well, there's this Island ..." and that's about it. Anything else said would be divulging something that's coming up and intended to be kept secret. However, I'd also say, "Don't look for all of it to make sense or your brain will explode."

I coudn't agree more. I actually quit this show midway in the 3rd season...I was punching too many holes in the series that I lost interest. THE EVENT was alright until...well, it slowly fell apart.

I almost gave up on LOST a few times. At the end of Season 1, I had this overwhelming impression of "this ain't goin' anywhere," but my wife convinced me to hang with it for awhile longer ... so I watched it "with one eye," so to speak. There are standout seasons, clearly, but overall the show is so deeply flawed with plotholes and sidebar premises that it's hard to see it as anything other than "one big dream sequence." The conclusion? I saw it as a big "F You" to the fans, who'd long ago figured out what was up despite the producers insistence that they hadn't. THE EVENT at least starting stretching the bounds of believeability right outta the gate -- meaning it really felt like it was going nowhere fast -- and, yeah, I'm hanging with it only because I can't find anything else worthwhile on a Monday night. Plus, my wife enjoys it.
