Five teenagers are selected by an alien being known as Zordon to battle his recently escaped nemesis Rita Repulsa and her band of misfits and monsters. Given power coins and morpher devices, these teens become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (MMPR). Jason Scott leads as the Red Ranger with close friends Zack Taylor (Black), Trini Kwan (Yellow), Kimberly Hart (Pink) and Billy Cranston (Blue).

At some point, Rita selects her own Ranger (Tommy Oliver) who eventually is defeated by the Power Rangers and is reformed to the side of good. The Green Ranger loses his powers later in the series, only to regain them then lose them again following the arrival of Rita's master Lord Zedd (who had banished Rita upon his arrival). Tommy rejoins the others after Zordon creates a new power coin for the former Green Ranger and promotes him as White Ranger, the new leader of the Power Rangers.

Jason, Zack, and Trini leave the team to pursue other interests and are replaced by the Rangers' allies Rocky DeSantos, Adam Park, and Aisha Campbell. Next to leave is Kimberly, who is replaced by Kat Hillard, who like Tommy, was under an evil spell. By the end of the MMPR saga, Aisha is replaced by family ancestor Tanya Sloan, who alters their family history by swapping their respective existences in time. Before Tanya can become the Yellow Ranger, the power coins are destroyed. This leads the storyline into season 4 of the franchise called Power Rangers Zeo, where the team receives new powers.
