Of the three pilots "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "Encounter at FarPoint" and "The Emissary" I consider "The Emissary" to be superior by far. By the end of the episode you know the history of Bajor, background on all the major characters and the threat posed by the Cardassians. That was not the case with the other two. What do others think?

Of these choices, I prefer 'The Cage.' I'd agree, though, that 'The Emissary' is pretty solid as an introduction to DS9; it's certainly vastly more entertaining than 'Encounter at Farpoint.' I just never got into the whole 'wormhole aliens' angle.

I have only seen Where No Man Has Gone Before. The original pilot (The Cage) was never broadcast and the actor who played Christopher Pike was removed and replaced by a different Captain for the second pilot (Shatner). I believe the first pilot was made a year before the second and the second a year before the regular series. I think that the writers kept changing their mind in the direction they wanted to go. The other pilots were probably for shows that were already slated for production so there was more uniformity in plot and direction.

The Emissary is a pretty good pilot, but Where No Man Has Gone Before is one of my favorite episodes of the original series.
