"Well if this cop gig doesn't work out we can always be firemen"

Denis Leary is a great comedian and not a bad actor and when I heard he had a great cop/comedy show on TV years back I was excited.  Just as I started watching it, it folded up right in the middle of a great developing story line.  Denis took the premise, added more drama and an extra twenty minutes to allow a longer running time and instead of a cop he was a fireman and the show is FX's Rescue Me with some similar characters and some of the same actors.

The Job has Denis Leary as Mike McNeil a New York Cop on the beat, juggling a girlfriend while married, smoking three packs a day at least and generally up to no good with his other cop friends.  He drinks anything with alcohol even cold medicines, steals as much credit as he can and normally is so much trouble his partner Pip's wife can't stand him and chides him when she can and even worse, the girlfriend continually harasses Mike about meeting his wife when Mike isn't ready to admit to infidelity.

The show only ran so long and has only a few episodes with the same recurring themes of sting operations, spying on coworkers, especially Diane Farr, the lovely lady of the group who Mike also has an eye on and even absurd plotlines such as a dead body that keeps getting moved around town so another precinct can take care of it, a fugitive hiding in a bathroom and a missing ballerina and even a barbeque with no alcohol at Pips house that Mike of course ruins.  One episode even has a plot about severed feet.

Short lived but like I said great elements taken into a new show that has done very well.  The Job really could have gone places and the lighter tone over Rescue Me makes it an easier TV diet.  A Diet of a barbeque and cold medicine.
